Frequently Asked Questions About Your Store

How do I treat weeds in my veggie garden?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off at ground level. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or your skin.

Is it possible to fix burnt grass?

The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. You'll need to rehydrate those roots. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod or patch and repair grass seed.

Is there an ideal time to water my lawn and garden?

If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. Watering when the sun is at its peak means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: lawns, trees, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it if it's not the ideal time. The plants still need hydration, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.

How often should I apply fertilizer?

Once you've got your plants in the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Avoid applying more often than recommended. Always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

What do you carry for backyard entertaining?

Backyard entertaining doesn't have to be a barbeque party. Some focus on the grill or fire pit, while others concentrate on yard games. Many people simply relax outdoors or cook a meal together in an outdoor kitchen. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free yard without pesky mosquitos.

Celebrate Summertime Gardening
As summer stretches on, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with shade, irrigation, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves too early. We've got advice to help you, your lawn, and your garden make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn, or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll discover it once you move something sitting in the yard, like a trash can. Mirrors or car windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by extreme wear or pet behavior, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care accordingly. Match the grass type to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of a type that prefers shade or dappled sun.

Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the trees and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get parched and dry in the summer heat. It's easy to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning yellow or brown. Also, check for damage on your trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time.

Look for leaves full of holes, spots on leaves or bark, or a network of raised lines on the bark that look like artistic decoration. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as they may ultimately end the life of your tree.

Grow Your Own Herbs
Get fresh flavors to accent the foods you love when you add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of volunteer herb sprouts, keep them in decorative plant pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Choose vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll enjoy dappled shade but no grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
