Frequently Asked Questions About Your Store

How can I treat weeds in my vegetable garden?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off at ground level. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and thick rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

Can I fix scorched grass?

You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the game plan for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod or patch and repair grass seed.

When should I water my garden?

If you can water during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. Watering when the sun is at its peak means much of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: gardens, trees, lawns, and flowers. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your climate, lawn health, and grass type, you may also want to look into adding a lawn fertilizer.

Does my garden need fertilizer?

Once you've gotten your plants settled into the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that suits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from the heat, shelter under a covered gazebo or patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I do a quick patio makeover for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a huge difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even a string of outdoor lights can breathe new life into an outdoor space.

Settle Into Summer
As we continue deeper into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We can help. At The Home Depot Granbury Garden Center, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has crispy and brown blades of grass, don't panic. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that basically goes to sleep and turns brown in the summertime heat. If that's the case, brown, but not in patches. Gently tug out a blade of grass to check the roots: If it comes right out, the grass is likely dead and you'll need to replace it. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting beneath the surface. Water dormant grass deeply once or twice per week, but don't fertilize it.

For warm-season grass that stays green in the summer, water a bit every few days and deeply once a week. The amount of water should add up to about an inch, more or less, each week. Don't overwater, and let the lawn dry out after heavy rains before you get out the sprinkler again. If it's especially hot out, water when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. It's fine to let it grow a little taller in the summer, as cutting it too short isn't healthy for this kind of lawn.

Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're watering your vegetable garden, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than summer flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not difficult to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and prevent it from turning brown or yellow. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery.

Look for holes in leaves, spots on bark or leaves, or a network of raised lines on the bark that look like artistic decoration. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as they may end the life of your tree.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll thrive in the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in decorative pots on a porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the appearance of your yard. Whether you plant an accent tree or a small forest keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider the full-grown size of the trees you want, how far the root ball extends outward, and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from water pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and wend into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if a major storm or disease weakened them.

If you've diligently planned, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade as soon as possible.
