How can I treat weeds in my vegetable garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear heavy rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or lungs.
How do I fix yellow grass?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a lengthy drink. Continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within the next week. On the other hand, the method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass or patch and repair grass seed.
How often should I water my garden?
If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. Watering when the sun is at its peak means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: trees, lawns, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the best time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, climate, and grass type, you may also want to add a lawn fertilizer.
Should I fertilize a fruit tree?
Once you've planted your flowers or veggie plants, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from the heat, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-chilled air is ready.
How do I make my patio look special for entertaining?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even a string of outdoor lights can bring character to an outdoor space.

Settle Into Summer
As summer stretches on, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At The Home Depot Hamden Garden Center, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.
Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has brown and crispy blades of grass, don't panic. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that goes dormant and turns brown in the heat of the summer. If that's the case, brown, but not in patches. Give a grass blade a gentle tug to check if it's still got live roots: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and will need to be replaced with new sod or grass seed. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting under the ground. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week but not fertilized.
Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Take care not to overwater, and let the lawn dry out after substantial rains before you get out the sprinkler again. Water your lawn when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. You can test with your finger. This might happen quicker than you'd think during extreme hot spells or periods of drought. It's fine to let it grow a little taller in the summer, as cutting your lawn too short isn't healthy for it.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're ensuring your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still dry out in the hot sun. It's not hard to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and prevent it from turning brown or yellow. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery.
Look for holes in leaves, spots on leaves or bark, or strange raised scars on the bark that look like artistic decoration. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree or shrub.
Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, try herb gardening. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll thrive in the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant an accent tree or a small forest keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.
A house framed by beautiful trees can seem picture-perfect, but research the specific trees you want before planting them. Consider how deep the taproots go, how far the root ball extends outward, and the full-grown size of the trees you want. Plant your trees far from plumbing pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and creep into piping to get it. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned.
If you've diligently planned, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade as soon as possible.
