Frequently Asked Questions About Your Store

What should I do about weeds in my garden?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or lungs.

Is brown grass dead?

It could be, but it's likely napping during those sizzling temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check to verify though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy. We have the lawn care you need for healthy warm-season and cool-season grass.

When should I water the lawn?

If you can water during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. Watering during the heat of the day means much of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, lawns, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it if it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.

How do I fertilize my plants?

Once you've got your plants into pots or the ground, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I do a quick patio makeover for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even a string of outdoor lights can breathe new life into a patio space.

Celebrate Summertime Gardening
As we continue deeper into summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn sail through the hotter months with flying colors.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Give it some TLC so it looks fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a push lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, fences, or buildings.

Trees, shrubs, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They're growing fast, filled with blooms and buds before you know it. Trim wild branches to the size and shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.

Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're watering your flower garden, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and prevent it from turning yellow or brown. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery.

Look for holes in leaves, spots on bark or leaves, or a network of raised lines on the bark that look like artistic decoration. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree.

Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many veggie plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the the stem or branches Fasten the plant to a trellis, pole, or fence with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then, the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze.

Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of string, a sling, old nylons, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
