Q:Should I drill holes from the inside/outside? What size drill bit to use? Can i use a wood drill bit?
by|Mar 5, 2022

Answer This Question

A:  It is probably easier to flip it over and drill from the bottom but, you can do drill from either direction. The drainage hole is up to you depending on how much drainage you want. I drilled (3) 1/2 inch holes in each section of the mailbox planter. You can use any type of drill bit. A masonry drill bit may reduce the amount of force you need to apply to drill the hole.

Q:Our yard lamppost is loose. Would this planter secure it if we put rocks, soil and flowers in it? Thanks

A:  To anchor my mailbox I used quick set concrete. That seems to have made it more secure.

    by|Jun 4, 2019

A:  Yes it should. This is a pretty stable product but this is what I would do. The planter is on 2 pieces that wrap around the pole. First I would drill several holes in the bottom of each side. Once the parts are in place pound several stakes through the holes and into the ground to stabilize the planter. I would also make sure that the planter is level on the ground and the light pole is straight. Then I would connect the 2 separate pieces with bolts. Then fill the bottom third of the wells with rocks to weight it down and finally use quick set cement in the square center hole around the pole. Full the rest of the void with potting soil and plant! I cannot promise it but I think this will work!t

A:  DO NOT use mailbox planters

        by|Aug 4, 2023

A:  These have been used to hold up free-standing posts. The trick is to fill the container with enough weight (add rocks & soil) and also pack the middle tightly with filler (rocks and soil) to try to keep the post from moving at all.

            1 found this answer helpful

A:  The post hole is larger than the standard 4X4 post. So, you will need to provide shims or fill in with closed cell foam spray. Once you do that, filling the base with rocks should hold up a lamp post. Oh, one other thing, there are no drainage holes. So, you will want to drill some so that rain water can drain out rather than get stagnant.

A:  Hello Molly, please make sure to drill enough drainage holes so that there is not any standing water in the container. Once this is done, you should not need to bring the container inside during the winter.

A:  So far so good. I left mine out around the mailbox and it’s fine so far. Didn’t want to take it apart because I have some perineals I hope will come back.

A:  You should be able to leave it in place. The product is weather resistant. We don't have harsh winters in GA, but mine has been in place through a number of freezes and still looks like it did the day I installed it.

I liked the first one purchased to put around my mailbox, it really improved the look and allowed area for decorative rock. I purchased 2 additional planter barrels to go around our pergola in our backyard.

I love how easily this fit around a mail post. Simple to assemble. It is surprisingly light weight too. It was necessary to drill drainage holes which could be a problem if you don’t have a drill. I used a masonry drill for this. My previous solid oak mailbox barrels eventually rotted away due to moisture. I am hoping this will be different. I was also impressed by how well it came packaged.

I have a huge cantilever umbrella with a large ugly weighted base. This barrel planter looks great around the umbrella post and covers up most of the ugly weighted base.
