5 ft. Certified Non-Conductive Fiberglass Soil Probe with Metal Tip

A:  Not sure how hard the ground is in SC I use this in the Mid Atlantic, near the beach in DE soil is mostly sandy with virtually no rocks larger than a pebble. I would hate to try this inland in PA where I grew up in hard packed soil with big stones. It should work in disturbed soil that is not mechanically compacted especially if it is not full of crush & run or any flat large gravel or stones. The tip is a large hard plastic point that takes some effort to push through dense soil. I would only use if there is a danger of hitting electric wires otherwise if I know no wires are present I use a thin steel rod with a rounded tip.

A:  It does not have a sharp cutting edge, I would suggest a Cutter-mattock Nupla 24551. It has a well balanced head and can make straight cuts and cross cuts. Good luck with the daylillies!

A:  Yes you could but you may find that a Pick Mattock 24-552 would be better for what you have described
