The FIFA World Cup 2026™ is the 23rd rendition of the world’s biggest football competition. The best men’s national teams compete for the title of World Champion. Held every four years, the tournament brings together teams from across the globe in a dramatic, month-long battle for the sport’s most prestigious title. Known for its thrilling matches, iconic moments and passionate fans, the FIFA World Cup 2026™ is on par to be the most-watched sporting event on the planet. It draws in billions of viewers, uniting nations through the love of the game.
Before the FIFA World Cup 2026™ begins, national teams must go through a rigorous qualification process spanning several years. Organized by FIFA and divided by continental zones, these regional qualifiers determine which teams earn a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026™. The FIFA World Cup 2026™ will be the first tournament in history to feature 48 teams vying to earn a spot in the final tournament.
Once qualified, the 48 teams enter the group stage. Teams are split into 8 groups of 4 and each team plays 3 round-robin matches, facing each opponent in their group. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The top two teams from each group advance to the next round.
After the group stage, the top 16 teams move to a knockout stage, also known as the Round of 16. This phase features a single-elimination bracket. Matches include the Round of 16, the Quarterfinals, the Semifinals and the Finals. If a match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to extra time and potentially a penalty shootout.
After weeks of competition, it comes down to the final match. The best two teams face off for the ultimate prize: the title of World Champion.
The FIFA World Cup 2026™ is being co-hosted by three countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada. There are 16 host cities and stadiums in total.
The United States is hosting in 11 cities:
• Atlanta
• Boston
• Dallas
• Houston
• Kansas City
• Los Angeles
• Miami
• New York/New Jersey
• Philadelphia
• San Francisco Bay Area
• Seattle
Canada is hosting in 2 cities:
• Toronto
• Vancouver
Mexico is hosting in 3 cities:
• Monterrey
• Mexico City
• Guadalajara
The opening match of the tournament is in Mexico City and the final match will be played at New York New Jersey Stadium.
The tournament has a rich, storied history that spans nearly a century. The inaugural competition was held in 1930 in Uruguay. Thirteen teams participated and the host nation emerged as the first-ever champion.
Since then, the tournament has been held every 4 years, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, when it was canceled due to World War II. The FIFA World Cup 2026™ is set to be the 23rd tournament in the history of FIFA.
Over the decades, the tournament has delivered some of the most iconic moments in sports history:
• Pelé burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 1958, helping Brazil win its first title. He remains the only player to win three championships in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He holds the Guinness World Record for most career goals in football (1,279 goals in 1,363 games).
• Diego Maradon’s “Hand of God” goal and his legendary solo run with Argentina against England in 1986 are etched into the competition lore. He scored a second goal, called “Goal of the Century” to win the tournament 2-1.
• Some other global superstars who have left their mark on the tournament are Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazário, Miroslav Klose, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.
Some national teams have dominated the FIFA World Cup™ stage:
• Brazil holds the record with 5 FIFA World Cup titles (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002).
• Germany follows closely with 4 titles (1954, 1974, 1990 as West Germany, 2014 as a unified Germany).
• Italy also boasts 4 titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006).
From its humble beginnings to becoming the most-watched sporting event on the planet, the tournament’s history is a celebration of football’s power to unite people, nations and generations.
