Choosing a Gazebo

A gazebo is a free-standing structure with open sides. It can be rectangular, round, oval but the traditional shape is octagonal. Some gazebo types include metal gazebos or wood gazebos. Pre-made are available. You can also build one from raw materials with a set of good plans.
There are many different construction methods that make attractive, functional gazebos. Post and beam, timber frame and pre-built kit are just a few. Gazebo sizes vary, but two of the most popular ones are 10-foot x 10-foot gazebos and 10-foot x 12-foot gazebos.
Building Permits for Gazebos

Before you build a gazebo, check local laws and zoning regulations to see if you need a building permit. Building codes and regulations vary from one location to the next. If a permit is required, make sure to get it before construction begins. Remember that homeowners associations may also govern the types of structures you can add to your yard.
Even if a building permit isn’t required, check local codes to determine how deep footings should be. In some locations, the footings need to go below the frost line to prevent heaving, which is when the freeze-thaw cycle forces them to move.
Site Selection and Safety Considerations

Site selection is important when building a gazebo. Choose an area that is level or that you can make level. You’ll also need to consider potential obstacles and safety concerns.
- Before building any outdoor structure, contact your local utility company to check for underground utility lines. The number 811 is the federally designated "call before you dig" number. It's there to help homeowners and professionals identify where underground lines are buried to avoid damage.
- Also be aware of overhead lines. Don’t build your gazebo directly underneath any overhead utility lines.
- Consider any trees in the area that might need to be trimmed or removed in the future. It may be better to do that work prior to construction.
- If a septic system is present, check the property diagrams for location of the tank and drain field. Do not build over either of these.
- If power will be run to the gazebo, check the path between it and the power source to ensure that a wire can be buried.
Build the Base of the Gazebo

Whether you have DIY gazebo plans or are assembling a pre-made kit, study the plans before you begin. Although gazebos vary in style, building one follows the same basic steps.
Consult your plans to check the exact steps for building your gazebo.
Prep the area and build base: The gazebo's base must be level. Whether you are putting it on a concrete slab or on a deck, you'll need to prepare a level area for the base.
A gazebo has a concrete or wood base. For a concrete slab foundation, pour the slab to the desired size. For added strength, use metal rebar in the concrete flooring. Let the concrete cure before continuing.
For a wood base, assemble the outside boards together to form the base. Level and secure it with screws then lay the decking.
Secure the Frame

- Set location of the posts: Mark location of the gazebo posts based on plans and then dig holes for the posts using a post hole digger.
- Cut the posts to length: Cut the posts to the proper height according to the gazebo plans or kit instructions.
- Set the posts: Make sure the posts are plumb in the holes. Use quick-setting concrete to anchor them. Another method of setting the posts is to pour a concrete foundation, then attach the posts to it.
- Mount bracing beams: Place the beams perpendicular to the posts. Secure the beams with two large bolts. Place bolts through the post and into the center of each beam.
- Add the top beams: Mount the beams to join the posts at the top.
Put Up the Walls

Build the gazebo walls according to the plans or kit instructions. When all wall sections are assembled, raise the walls. Stand two walls up and attach them to each other with screws in each corner. Continue attaching the rest of the wall sections.
Put Up the Roof

Cut the roof beams to length. Then, attach the gazebo roof beams in place. Add the rest of the roof pieces, including fascia boards and shingles.
Add the Finishing Touches

As you learn how to build a gazebo, you can customize it. Paint and stain add beauty and protect the structure. In addition to painting and staining your gazebo, you can add decorative touches, like a cupola or hanging plants.
A backyard gazebo provides a shady spot to unwind. You can also host gatherings there. Add a grill and a table and some chairs to make a spot perfect for a barbecue. Hang some string lights to create an inviting atmosphere for evening events. When you know how to build a gazebo, the possibilities are almost endless.
