Make a Plan

A traditional hopscotch game is a grid of 10 squares numbered from one to 10. To make a hopscotch game with stepping stones, you'll need 10 pavers. The ones shown are 24 inches by 24 inches. For pavers this size, consider creating a stable base first with gravel or small pebbles to help prevent pavers from cracking. Or you can use smaller, 12 inch by 12 inch square pavers.
Build Hopscotch Board

To create the hopscotch board shown above:
- Place tile #1 down.
- Place tiles #2 and #3 side-by-side above tile #1.
- Center tile #4 above #2 and #3.
- Repeat this pattern for tiles #5, #6, #7, #8 and #9.
- Place the final paver, #10, at the very top.
Customize Your Pavers with Art

Using colorful sidewalk chalk, put your own spin on your game board with original art designs. Since your artwork will wash away with rainfall or a squirt from the garden hose, consider creating fresh hopscotch art each time you play. Your customizable hopscotch board is limited only by your imagination. Don't forget to number your squares.
How to Play Hopscotch

The goal of hopscotch is to hop on one leg to the top square, turn around and hop back. The first person to complete the course wins. You'll need a bean bag or small stone to play.
Each player takes a turn, tossing the stone to the next number with each turn. Here’s how to play:
- The first player tosses the stone on the #1 square. The stone must land inside the square.
- Going up the board, the player will skip the square with a stone on it.
- On their return, the player will pick up the stone.
- When a player reaches a side-by-side tile, they must put a foot on each square.
- As each player lands on the square with the stone, they pick up the stone and hop home.
Rules:A player's foot must remain within each square and cannot touch the sides. If their foot goes outside of the square, the player loses their turn.
Tip: If playing with very young children, let the youngest players go first.
Hopscotch is a fun game the whole family can play. Plus, it teaches children counting skills, how to take turns and helps build coordination.
