Before you start prepping your home for all things fall, be sure to pack up any signs of summer. While you don't have to swap out all of your textiles and decor, this is the time to store away any brighter shades and other items that signify sunnier days.

The fall season is all about textured fabrics, so pillows with woven fabrics and textured curtains are great additions to incorporate into your living room. Think about the colors you see in nature throughout fall (rusts, deep reds and more) and don't be afraid to tie in rich jewel tones as well. Swap out lighter throws for cozier blankets woven in chunky knits. Add these throws on chairs and couches to add a truly cozy vibe.

For dining tables, consider switching out place settings or adding dishware with seasonal style to your everyday plates. Swap out silverware for flatware in richer copper or rose gold tones and add a centerpiece that incorporates decor inspired by fall foliage, like pinecones, leaves and branches.

Make an entryway stand out with rustic touches and real mini pumpkins. The beauty of using pumpkins as decor is that you can use them sparingly and still achieve your goal. Mini white pumpkins can seal the deal on a rustic fall vignette.
In fact, just add a few to a classic wooden bowl and your console, coffee table or dining table is ready for fall.

Cool temperatures bring cooler floors, especially in homes with tile or wooden flooring. Because fall is synomyous with layering and warmth, it's the perfect time of year to layer rugs. You can use your current rug or update the entire look with a new jewel-toned or richly colored rug over a jute, or other natural fiber, rug. Especially great for entryways and living rooms, this look works in nearly every room.

Ideal for the crafter and those with small kids in the house, adding little homemade touches of fall throughout your home can really get the whole family excited for the season. Every day craft pieces like yarn, burlap, crabapple branches and twine can transform centerpieces and fireplaces. Let the kids forage for leaves in the front yard or pick out fall flowers at the farmer's market and display their work around the house.

Plaid may be the eternal pattern of fall. Available in a variety of color combinations, plaid pillows on a bed or sofa signify comfortable fall days. Used sparingly, plaid is a simple way to add color into your home decor, if you aren't too into big splashes of marigold, rust and greens. However, it's really easy to go big with plaid and create an entire autumn-inspired plaid tablescape or update your entire guest room bed with plaid wallpaper or an abundance of plaid pillows in various colors.

Although this idea isn't for the home decor updater who wants to keep it simple, paint can completely transform a room for a season. Add a fresh coat of paint in a moody color like gray or a rich shade of blue and watch the mood of the room shift from bright, sunny space to comfy, serene spot instantly.

While breathable sheets and bedding are needed for summer, fall's crisper air calls for updated bedding. Swap out lighter covers for cozy layers of quilts or heavier duvets and keep extra blankets on hand. If it gets cooler where you live, or you have been using a summer weight duvet insert, switch it out for a medium-weight insert.

When it comes to sheets, play with colors and patterns and think about upgrading to a linen sheet, which will keep your body temperature pretty even throughout the season. Don't forget to update your throw pillows, either with removable pillow cases in richer tones, plaid or animal print or with all new pillows.
