Camellias are the perennial jewels of the winter and spring garden, adding a tidal wave of color to shady spots. A favorite in Southeastern U.S. gardens, camellias originated in eastern and southern Asia. The long-blooming shrubs and trees are members of the tea family, Theaceae.

More than 3,000 varieties of camellias exist in stunning blooms of white, pink, red, yellow and even striped. Though slow to grow, camellia plants have an exceptionally long life. Larger varieties grow six to 14 feet tall and five to seven feet wide.

In this guide, learn how to plant and nurture camellias in your garden.
