Coastal She Shed Ideas

My Coastal She Shed is completely and utterly inspired by my love for the sea, from the gray siding, to the beachy blue doors and shutters (which match those on our home), to the coastal plants and grasses.

The aged copper whale weathervane is also one of my favorite motifs; I’ve always wanted one. Of course, I had to have a whale on top of my she shed.

The shed is the Horizon model from Sheds USA with two large doorways, which allows for cross ventilation. I opted for cedar doors, window boxes and shutters, which I painted in a glossy blue.

I shared my inspiration and the shed installation on my blog. The shed went up so fast (only two hours!), and they even put the whale weathervane on for me.

I’m not the only one partial to my coastal she shed, as my little dog Poppy loves it. She rolls in the mini marble chip patio we created, which makes her black fur turn white. It is too adorable.

The DIY that I think made the most impact, and added an instant warmth, is the shiplap walls. Nothing says coastal to me more than crisp, clean white paneling. It took us about half a day to do the walls and then I painted them. I also stained the wood floor.

We made the nautical wall hangings from old charts I found at an antique shop in Scituate Harbor, and attached them to stained dowels. They have images of Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod on them. I adore the colors of old maps; the soft blues, tans and whites.

This Hampton Bay all-weather wicker loveseat is perfect in the space and adds texture.

As my coastal she shed is a creative space, I love to be surrounded by artwork of all kinds.

The pillows on the couch are painted by my dear friend Lucy of Craftberry Bush who is an amazing watercolor artist. The blue crab is pretty, and the whale mirrors the one on top of my shed.

I also really love plants. I think they add life to the space and a feeling of love and being loved. The shed is full of palms and assorted succulents.

This one didn’t even need a DIY or upcycling. I found this as is at The Home Depot.

Hydrangeas from my yard also make an appearance. I have a weakness for blue and white together (if you couldn’t tell).

Since the shed is 8 x 12, we tried to fit in as much as we could.

We made a custom coffee table for the space and used Sunbleached stain by Varathane to create that lovely coastal patina. I think this is my new favorite stain color!

We streamlined the coffee table and also added a shelf for storage. A giant clam shell holds many more succulents.

Shells are everywhere, as I have a vast collection. Design magazines are everywhere, too; this space is my retreat for writing so everything in here inspires me in some way.

The SEA SIDE canvas letters are from my friend's Etsy shop, 163 Design Company.

These add a lovely texture, but are also a reminder of the casual lifestyle I love so much.

The console table is perfect for this room since it has a narrow depth but plenty of shelf space! I left it natural wood to warm up the space.

Wood also frames Kjeld Mahoney’s image of a sailboat. He captured the light and tranquility of Scituate Harbor.

So there you have it: my she shed!

The white shiplap, the glossy ceramic patio stools, watercolor coastal pillows, muted wood, natural textures, plants and seashells all make for a very relaxing she shed. Out here, I can listen to the birds sing, the crickets chirp, and the sound of my thoughts and dreams.This is a quiet space for reflection, writing, and truly embracing a coastal life.
