Designing Old World Charm in a Lakeside Rental Home
I was part of a home makeover project with The Home Depot where three design influencers redesigned a lakeside rental property in The Berkshires. The stunning fall destination was the perfect canvas for bringing an old-world charm to the lakeside home.
The scope of the project involved little to no demo, and I was able to completely transform the three bedrooms assigned to me with home decor selections available online at HomeDepot.com. Updating furniture and decor is a relatively cost-effective way to upgrade an old home without tearing down walls.
Updating the Room Layout

The first room I was assigned to reimagine was not very functional. It had a futon and some chairs in a space that could have been better used as a guest bedroom with single beds. I utilized the large square footage to turn it into a bedroom with twin beds, a writing desk area along with a full-sized dresser. The whole room was painted using BEHR MARQUEE Wild Truffle color, and to highlight the beautiful architectural details, I added trim work to the blank walls. My favorite thing in this room is the gold mirror above the dresser, which adds a historic touch to the room.
Add Character with Wallpaper

The other two bedrooms both had in-room closets with mirrored sliding doors. My immediate reaction was to replace the doors with something more modern; however, given the scope of the project, I had to get creative and make use of the mirrored doors in my design. I ended up putting wallpaper on the mirrored closet doors and continuing the paper throughout the rooms. I am all about pattern and color and this was a great opportunity to add a fun detail to the rooms! When wallpapering over a mirror, I recommend using wallpaper primer as a base coat before adhering to the wallpaper.
Create a Focal Point

For the balcony bedroom, I chose a color palette that echoed Fall colors in The Berkshires. Think rich browns and rust tones. The Ashdale ivory bed had the perfect shape to act as a focal point and inspiration for the rest of the room décor pieces. I brought in a cozy boucle armchair to create a reading nook. To finish it off, I laid down a luxurious 9x12 rug with brick tones to complete the look.
Inspired by Nature

The last room I styled was another guest bedroom and I went with a green color palette to bring in a touch of nature. The botanical patterned wallpaper set the tone for the rest of the room. I chose a curved headboard to soften all the vertical lines in the room and paired it with a more modern matte black ceiling light. For a small room, wall sconces are a great way to use up wall space and leave more room on the nightstands for storage. I was so thrilled to find all the decor pieces down to the candlesticks all at The Home Depot online! One of my favorite things about this room is the luxurious bedding from The Company Store, which makes you want to snuggle in bed all day!
If you are planning a home makeover or remodel, The Home Depot is quite literally a one-stop shop where you can find DIY tools and supplies to frame a wall and decorate that wall all at the same time!
