Step 3: Add a Few Essentials
The garage is a great place for extra storage, but that means it can easily become a catch-all for all kinds of items.
Then, before you know it, you’ve piled up everything from cleaning supplies to paint to grilling accessories to holiday decorations in the corner and you don’t even know what you do and don’t have anymore.
It’s not only an eyesore, but it makes finding and using what you need almost impossible.

At least, that’s what happened here--as you can see.
So, let’s dive in and give this space a much-needed refresh with the help of The Home Depot’s exclusive lineup of HDX products.
Step 1: Clean and Paint
The first thing I did to this corner of the garage was pull everything out and give the walls and the floor a good cleaning to remove the dust bunnies, dirt and cobwebs.
A good cleaning is always a great place to start when refreshing a space.
HDX offers a wide selection of products to help with this part of the project. HDX push brooms, gloves, scrubbing sponges, cleaners and more are available exclusively at The Home Depot.

Once the walls were clean, I gave the entire garage a fresh coat of white paint to brighten things up a bit.
Step 2: Organize and Add Storage

Now it was time for the fun part—organizing and adding storage to these blank walls.
The current garage didn’t have any shelving, which made it really difficult to try to organize everything. So, we definitely needed to add shelving—but what kind?
I separated the garage items into two categories—things that need to be readily available (like paints, cleaning supplies, tools) and things that were only needed occasionally (like beach chairs, seasonal décor, keepsakes).
The “lesser used” items can be stored up high and out of the way, but the readily available items need to stay down low so that they’re easy to get to.
So, for the up high items, I assembled some simple triangle braces using 2x4s and screwed these into the wall studs so that the bottoms were about seven feet from the ground.
Then, I placed a piece of ¾” plywood across them to give me a large, sturdy shelf. I organized the occasionally used items in large, sturdy HDX storage totes, then placed them along this wall shelf.

These handy storage totes come in various sizes to fit your needs and your space.
Then, I shifted focus to organizing and storing some of the items that needed to be more readily available.
HDX has a full line of shelving units in a range of styles and sizes. So, I picked two shelving units—one smaller plastic shelf and one larger metal shelf—to fit perfectly along this wall.
These shelves only took a few minutes to assemble (no tools required!) and helped to get everything up off the floor, organized, and easy to find.
Step 3: Add a Few Essentials

Now that this corner of the garage is cleaned up and organized, it feels like a whole new space! There’s more room to pull in the vehicles, and more floor space to easily walk around in.
And the best part about everything being up off the floor is that it’s finally easy to find!
There were even a few empty shelves and totes left after putting everything away, so I figured what better way to use them than to restock on a few HDX essentials like trash bags and paper towels.
Hopefully these can help keep this corner neat and tidy going forward!
