I think the most powerful part of design is paint. The color determines the entire feel of a room. Bright and lively, serene and calming, or dark and moody. It is my favorite way to invoke the personality of a room. Let’s use paint from The Home Depot to make a room inspired by an era!

Above is the moodboard for the room. Antique, but with a fresh spin.
Our home was built in 1975. It’s older, but not historical. I wanted to create a room that has a very old feel, while keeping it modern so it still makes sense in our home.

This bedroom started as very boring beige. It had no life to it. When I found this antique bed a light bulb turned on. The bed was made at the turn of the 20th century. Around that time through the 1920’s, rich and saturated colors were popular. That trend is back 100 years later and I am thrilled! Colors like jade greens, rich reds and peacock blue-greens really defined the era. A deep blue-green felt so perfect to bring that period into the room.

First, we added a beadboardand a thicker baseboard. Again, these were popular in the early 1900’s and they are now! It felt so fitting to add them and use paint to make them really be a focal point of the room. To add the beadboard, we got four 96 inch panels and cut them in half. We added them on top of the baseboard so that it would go up a bit higher on the wall. That way you will be able to see it behind the bed once it's in. The problem we found was making sure it was all level. That was tricky. Using a laser levelto make sure we knew where it would line up helped. We are also adding a wood cap trim piece on top that is meant for wall paneling. Once we caulk and paint you will never notice the imperfections. Paint really does wonders!

Since this room is for my teen daughter and I didn’t want the room to be too dark. Painting the beadboard and trim a fun pop of color while painting the top a nice creamy white gives the space that modern touch with just enough moodiness. The white above the beadboard is Blank Canvas in Behr Marquee with an Eggshell sheen.

When I am painting highly saturated colors my go-to paint is Behr Dynasty. It is a premium paint worth every penny. It covers in one coat, even with dark colors. Since this color, Pine Brook by Behr, was going on the beadboard, trim and door, I used a satin sheen. That will give it a hint of a shine and it's easily wipeable. I rolled on the paint and then used a brush to get in the grooves and level out any stippling from the roller.

This color is absolutely PERFECT! It gives that early 1900’s feel all while feeling fresh and modern.

Bringing in some antique furniture and art gives that old world feel. The Pine Brook green makes every single piece POP! The room now has history with a modern spin! Thanks to The Home Depot for being such an incredible resource for paint. From the eco-friendly sized paint samples, many different price points for gallons, and the amazing ability to color match anything!
