Transition Your Backyard From Winter to Spring With a Quick and Easy Refresh

Even the best cared-for outdoor spaces can look a little drab after a hard and cold winter. A quick weekend update that focuses on maintenance, light gardening, lighting, and a grill upgrade will have your backyard space looking revitalized in no time.

Step 1
Order your maintenance supplies and any additional backyard items ahead of time:
- Maintenance items like weed spray, mulch, pine straw, soil, outdoor lighting, and even grills can be ordered online at Homedepot.com or through The Home Depot App.
- Items available in-store are typically available for in-store or curbside pickup within 24 hours.
- While you’re at the store pick up any additional live goods you need from the garden center. A mix of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and herbs is a great mix of plants to liven up a backyard.

Step 2
Treat weeds and clean out leaves, overgrown plans, and foliage:
- Treat weeds in lawns, flower beds, and gravel areas. Weed B-gon Lawn Weed Killer Ready-To-Use provides an easy way to spot treat areas.
- If your space is overgrown with weeds the Weed B-gon Lawn Weed Killer Ready-To-Spray attaches to a hose and provides more even coverage for lawns.

Step 3
Plant shrubs, flowers, ground covering, and herbs:
- Bring life back into your space by planting a variety of shrubs, herbs, annuals, and perennials.
- Planting multiple shrubs in a row to grow a hedge and add visual interest to the landscape.
- Add flowers and herbs to pots, hanging felt planters, and raised planters to add colorful and living accents.
- Herbs serve a dual purpose: beauty and function.

Step 4
Install post and solar lamp. Add additional light to your space by adding a light post with a solar-powered light:
- Dig a hole 18 inches deep and 6 inches in diameter.
- Place the post into the hole and set it with quick-setting concrete (use according to package instructions).
- Set a level on the post. Adjust the post as needed until it is plumb. Quick-Setting Concrete begins to harden quickly so all adjustments to the post should be made just after adding the water.
- Once the post is set, install a LED Outdoor Solar Post Light to the Post to add additional beauty, ambiance, and visibility to your space.

Step 5
Add moisture barriers and/or pinestraw:
- Moisture barriers like Mulch and soil can help maintain moisture in the soil, inhibit weed growth, and add visual appeal.
- Use the soil and Mulch Calculator to determine exactly how much mulch you need for your project. 1 bale of pine straw will cover approximately 40 square feet of space.
- Smooth out the area to be mulched using your hands or a landscaping rake.
- Although optional, adding weed control fabric before mulching will add additional moisture retention and weed control.
- Add mulch around your space and smooth it out to maintain an even and uniform look.
- To spread pine straw take large handfuls and toss it around the area until you have a uniform and even layer.

Step 6
Round out the space with a grill, fire pit, and additional lights:
- The Genesis E-325s 3-Burner Propane Gas Grill in Black with Built-In Thermometer is a good choice for an elevated gas grill experience. It has a sear station and an extra large serving station to make the grilling experience enjoyable and easy.
- Fire pits help elevate an outdoor living space by adding an element of warmth and a central focal point.
- Hang additional string lights to add layered ambient lighting.
