Frequently Asked Questions about Rentals

How do I rent a piece of large equipment, a tool, or a truck?

Stop by the Rental Center at your nearest Home Depot to see what tools or trucks you can rent. If you want confirmation before you drive there, call first to inquire about a truck, tool, or large equipment. You may also check out our tool and equipment rental or truck rental pages to see if what you need is available at your favorite store. For more details on renting tools or large equipment, read our Tool Rental FAQs, including equipment terms and conditions.

Can I rent large equipment or a tool by the hour?

Large equipment rentals and tool rentals start at four hour time slots. It depends on how long you'd like to rent them. Small DIY projects may only require a rental for a few hours, and major projects aren't a problem either. You've got options to rent large equipment and tools by the month, day, or week, too. If you need it longer than your initial rental period, call your Rental Center for an extension and avoid late fees.

When can I bring the tools back?

You're welcome to return the tools early if you finish your project faster than planned, but on-time works, too. As long as you return it by the deadline you were given when you rented it, you'll be good to go. Please clean off dust, mud, and grime from the tool as well. If you need the tools longer, give the rental center a call to see if you can extend your rental period.

Can I choose how long to rent a truck?

Rent a truck or cargo van for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes could be plenty. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on the length of your project. Remember to factor in the drive to and from the store, as you must bring it back to the same store where you rented it. Penske moving truck rentals allow one-way rentals as well as round-trip options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the terms and conditions before choosing a truck.

Do I need to refill the rental truck with gas?

Yes, please fuel up the truck before you bring it back. Match the level of gas that was in the tank when you received the rental. When you don't refill the vehicle, you'll have to pay a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.

Can I rent large equipment or a truck with only a driver's license?

No, you must hold a valid driver's license and be over the age of 21. Depending on your state, you may require car insurance, as well as a deposit or credit card hold, too. Please bring your credit card for Home Depot truck rentals, as we don't accept cash. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements. Large equipment or select tools also require ID verification via CLEAR.

Do I need to go get my rented large equipment?

Depending on your location, you may be able to get large equipment delivered to your job site for a reasonable cost — at your home or out in the field. We'll need at least 24 hours notice so we can adequately prepare your rented equipment and you'll need to rent it for a full day. Speak to an associate for the best way to get your large equipment.

What are some ways to avoid extra fees and penalties on my large equipment rentals?

Think of your large equipment rentals as any other vehicle: Make sure it's parked legally and you obey traffic laws. Read the manual so you're using it correctly to avoid damaging the equipment or injuring yourself. Also, plan ahead to ensure the equipment is ready when you are. If you cancel within 12 hours of your scheduled delivery, you'll pay a cancellation fee. Make sure to return equipment by the deadline or extend the rental period to accommodate the extra time you require.
