How do I rent a piece of large equipment, a tool, or a truck?
Stop by your local Rental Center to see what trucks or tools you can rent. If you want to be sure of what's in stock, call first to inquire about a tool, truck, or large equipment. You may also read our truck rental or tool and equipment rental pages to see if what you need is carried at your store. For more information on renting tools or large equipment, read these Tool Rental FAQs, which includes equipment terms and conditions.
Can I rent a tool or large equipment by the hour?
Large equipment rentals and tool rentals start at four hour time slots. Simply choose the length of time that suits you. Small DIY jobs may only require a rental for a few hours, and long-term projects are no problem. You've got options to rent tools by the week, day, or month, too. If you need it longer than your initial rental period, call your Rental Center to arrange an extension and avoid late fees.
When can I bring the tools back?
You can return the tools early if you complete your project faster than planned, but on-time works, too. Just make sure to bring them back by the deadline listed on your rental paperwork. Please clean off dust, mud, and grime from the tool as well. If you need them longer, call your rental center to see if you can extend your rental period.
Can I rent a truck for a week?
Rent a truck or cargo van for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes could be enough time. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on the length of your project. Don't forget to factor in the drive to and from the store, as you'll need to bring it back to the same store where you rented it. Penske moving truck rentals allow round-trip options as well as one-way options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the documentation before choosing a truck.
Should I refill the rental truck before I bring it back?
Yes, please fill up the truck before you return it. Match the level of gas that was in the tank when you received the rental. When you don't refill the vehicle, you'll have to pay a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.
Do I just need a driver's license to rent a truck or large equipment?
No, you must hold a valid driver's license and be over the age of 21. Depending on your state, you may require car insurance, as well as a deposit or credit card hold, too. Please bring your credit card for Home Depot truck rentals, as we don't accept cash. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements, so read those if you plan to rent a Penske truck. Select tools as well as large equipment also require ID verification via CLEAR.
Do I need to pick up my rented large equipment from the store?
Depending on your location, you may be able to get large equipment delivered and removed from your job site for an affordable rate — out in the field or at your own home. We'll need at least 24 hours notice so we can prepare your rental delivery for you and you'll need to rent it for a full day. Speak to an associate for the ideal way to get your large equipment.
What are some ways to avoid extra fees and penalties on my large equipment rentals?
Treat your large equipment rentals as any other vehicle: Make sure it's parked legally and you obey traffic laws. Read the operator's manual so you're using it correctly to avoid injuring yourself or damaging the equipment. Also, plan ahead to ensure the equipment is ready when you are, as cancelling within 12 hours of delivery means you'll incur a cancellation fee. Extend your rental period if you need extra time so you won't get charged a late fee.
