How do I rent a truck, tool, or piece of large equipment?
Stop by your local Rental Center to see what tools and trucks are up for rent. If you'd like to be sure of what's in stock, call first to inquire about a truck, tool, or large equipment. You may also visit our truck rental or tool and equipment rental pages to see if what you need is offered at your local store. For more details on renting tools or large equipment, read our Tool Rental FAQs, including terms and conditions for the equipment.
Can I rent a tool or large equipment for a week?
You can rent a tool or large equipment for four hours or more. Simply choose the length of time that suits you. Small DIY jobs may only require a short rental period, and long-term projects can also be accommodated. You've got options to rent tools by the month, week, or day, too. If you need it longer than what you signed up for, call your Rental Center to arrange an extension and avoid late fees.
When do I return the tools?
It's fine to return the tools early if you finish your project ahead of schedule, but on-time works, too. Just make sure to bring them back by the deadline listed on your rental paperwork. Please clean off mud and grime from the tool as well. If you need them longer, call your local rental center to see if you can extend your rental period.
How long can I rent a truck?
Rent a box truck, cargo van, or pickup truck for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes might be plenty. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on how long your project is. Be sure to factor in the drive to and from the store, as you must return it to the same store you rented it from. Penske moving truck rentals allow one-way rentals as well as round-trip options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the terms and conditions before choosing your truck.
Do I need to refill the rental truck with gas?
Yes, please fill up the truck before you bring it back. Match the amount of gas that was in the tank when you received the rental. When you don't refill the rental vehicle, you'll have to pay a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.
Do I just need a driver's license to rent large equipment or a truck?
No, you also need to be 21 or older, in addition to holding a valid driver's license. Depending on your state, you might require car insurance, as well as a deposit or credit card hold, too. We don't accept cash for Home Depot truck rentals, so please bring your credit card. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements. Large equipment or select tools also require ID verification via CLEAR.
Do I need to pick up my large equipment rental from the store?
Depending on your location, you can get large equipment dropped off at your job site for a reasonable cost — at your home or out in the field. You'll need to rent it for one day or longer and provide us with 24 hours notice so we can prepare your rental delivery for you. In places where delivery isn't available, speak to an associate for the ideal way to get your large equipment.
How do I avoid penalties and extra fees on rented large equipment?
Treat your large equipment rentals as any other vehicle: Make sure you obey traffic laws and it's parked legally. Read the operator's manual so you're using it correctly to avoid damaging the equipment or injuring yourself. Also, plan ahead to ensure the equipment is ready when you are. If you cancel within 12 hours of your scheduled delivery, you'll pay a cancellation fee. Extend your rental period if you need extra time so you won't get charged a late fee.
