Does it work to seal in fragrance in solid-wood cabinets if that fragrance migrated through year-old "air purifying paint? How long does it take to not smell (how long does it offgas?
        ByJun 12, 2026
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Good question! Rust-Oleum Zinsser BIN Shellac Based Primer provides our best odor blocking properties for wooden surfaces. Depending on the porosity of the surface multiple coats may be required for the best results. Once the primer has fully cured it will no longer offgas any vapors. BIN will fully cure in 1-3 days. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I have several (5 or so) water stains on a ceiling. I will be priming with your shellac primer (not synthetic). Can I spot paint with the primer and the top coat with ceiling paint or do I need to paint the whole ceiling with the primer and then apply to?

            Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up, Edith! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer can be applied to a wood subfloor to seal in odors, it must be used under flooring material such as floor paint, wood, carpet, vinyl, or tile. Wait until the primer has fully cured (1-3 days) before installing the flooring material. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

You may have heard of “bringing in the sheep” but I was sealing in the pee with this product. Had tenants who had pets in my rental property. Unfortunately the pets were smarter than the renters and were not let out to do their duty in a timely manner. I used the Zinsser BIN to seal the subfloor after treating with anti icky poo. It seems that this has helped mitigate the odor pretty well but my best advice is to NOT allow pets in a rental property under any circumstances. I am happy with the purchase and result.

All Zinsser products are exceptional. My kitchen hood had several pine knots that were bleeding through the paint. I applied 2 light coats of this product and the knots completely disappeared. I read there may be an odor with this product, so I lit a candle, placed a fan nearby and opened the patio door. This worked perfectly. I attached a before and after photo.

This is the best and only primer for serious stains and odors. its expensive but worth every single penny.

I bought a new home and in one of the room there was a very bad smell. I thought it was the old carpet and ripped it out, but it turned out that there was some kind of old adhesive on the floor. I covered it up with the BIN primer and it completed encapsulated the smell. Great product.

I've used this many times previously to restore and/or paint new wood doors. It's excellent for coverage of bare wood and creating a durable prime coat. I use a minimum of 2 coats for new wood doors and restoring older wood cabinet doors and interior doors. Although messy to clean up, it's well worth it!

I have been a fan of this product for years, but now even more so. I am doing a remodel of a huge historic home and realized that the closets are all painted with oil based white gloss paint. I need to cover it with flat white latex. So, I used this product over the oil after knocking the dust off, and after full cure you could not scrape it off with a thumbnail. The latex sticks to bin like glue. The only negative is the incredible denatured alcohol fumes (you know, the stuff they sell in cans labeled “fuel”) keep plenty of air movement and wear a paint grade respirator the whole time you are using it. With reasonable self protection, this is an easy to use and fantastic product.

                NOT FOR EXTERIOR OR WOOD
DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT... This primer it'll crack and won't stick to wood... Avoid this expensive primer that doesn't honor the information on the front label... All the spots that I applied are cracking and peeling... I called the company on the label and they won't honor the warranty... The woman that I talked on the customer service said that this primer is not for exterior and it clearly says on the label under the B-I-N letters "interior & exterior spots". Now I have a big problem...

The only primer I will ever use!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Living on the gulf coast, the humidity and salt in the air molds, mildews, and rusts everything! Preventative maintenance is key to any decor or furnishings you wish to keep outside. I also upcycle used furniture, and this primer is a must for the base of any project. I use this on wood and concrete. It lays like a dream and dries flat. Even if I apply it thick, it self-levels perfectly. There are no brush strokes or air bubbles making your top coat smooth and flat. I have enclosed one of my projects that had terrible mold and mildew that I brought back to life. Not only does this cover unsightly mold stains, it prevents any further moisture or humidity from warping the wood. This primer has made it through 2 rainy seasons without any signs of wear. I truly use it on anything I can to keep pricey items looking like new.
