What is the difference between rotary hammer and hammer drill. Is the HP2050 a rotary hammer or a hammer drill?
      ByApr 12, 2023
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Thank you for your question on the HP2050 3/4 hammer drill. The rotary hammer is larger, faster, and more powerful than a hammer drill, and can drill holes of up to 2 inches in diameter, most always air driven. The HP2050 is a hammer drill that features a 2-mode operation for “Rotation Only” or “Hammering with Rotation” and can use to mix concrete.

This is listed as a 6.6 Amp 3/4 in. Corded Hammer Drill but the specifications states the chuck size is 1/2" in. So what is the real size of the maximum chuck opening?

don't know. but i had one for only a day drilling metal and only was able to drill about 10 5/8" holes before the drill broke. stripped the gears....I used to be a contractor and had high appreciation for Makita tools. but this one was junk. and the sad thing was I could not find anything better to purchase. still don't have a good electric drill for metal. hope this helps.

Thank you for your question on the HP2050 hammer drill. The country of origin is China. Please be advised that all of the Makita corporation's manufacturing centers around the world are held to the same Quality Criteria.

Yes but not ideal. They make slower and more geared down drills which work better for mixing heavy stuff like drywall compound and motor.

Can I use a Chesil with this hammer drill?

                      Answer This Question

Thank you for your question on the HP2050 Drill. This drill was designed for drilling and hammering applications. I would consider another tool for the chiseling application like the HM1203C Demolition tool this tool was designed for chiseling.

                      By|Feb 16, 2022

No you cannot use a chisel because the chuck rotates continuously. It is suitable for drill bits only.

                        By|Apr 19, 2022

It would be nice but you cannot

                          By|Feb 17, 2022

No.  This is a drill, not a pneumatic hammer. The hammer option in the drill assists you with drilling into brick and concrete. If you need a tool to run a chisel, you may need to look for an air hammer.

Seems to work without load well, but upon trying to use it the chuck would slip and fail to grip despite minimal pressure on drilling with a 1/4 drill bit, I'm going to assume user error first because that's a bad enough issue it would be unusable, I haven't had enough use with it yet to say it's bad or not, so will default to say it's good but be wary it may or may not have a major flaw, make sure it works and be aware.

                                  Terrible Product
I drilled 1 - 1.75 inch hole into concrete and it CAUGHT FIRE. Caught fire. After ONE not even two inch hole in concrete with a brand new carbide tipped bit... DO NOT BUY. You can see where the plastic melted above the last 'a' in the logo.

Good hammering action, but poor details make it harder to use
The pros: Inexpensive, good hammering action, good case. Cons: Depth gauge will not stay put, chuck key is locked in wrong position on cord, chuck lets go of bits too easily, and too easy to press trigger when you don't mean to. For the price, this entry-level hammer drill is a good value, and I don't regret getting it, because it did the job. BUT you have to be much more careful with it because of poor design: 1. The handle and depth gauge are not well made, so the depth gauge CANNOT be locked into place no matter how hard you crank down on the handle. The rod vibrates out of place every time. 2. The chuck key is zip tied to the power cord near the top, where a little piece of reinforcing rubber doesn't let it slide down the power cord. As a result, you can't use the key unless you remove it from the (cheap plastic) holder, making it easier to misplace the key. Also, the holder is going to brake sooner or later. 3. Be VERY careful seating bits all the way in and cranking down on the chuck completely to lock them in. It seems much harder to lock them in than necessary. 4. When handling the tool, if you pick it up by the grip, you will inadvertently pull the trigger a lot. It's kind of dangerous. Watch out.

The drill is easy to use, not loud and the price is reasonable. I've just used it once when I fixed a bike organizer at the wall, so I can't say further or how is the durability. I haven't seen any battery at the device.

This drill died on me after using it maybe 6 times over several years. I have cheaper drills that are still working after 10-20 years. I did like the hammer/drill feature. It did not meet my expectations. Suggest pass on this drill.

                                          Dangerous overheating issues
I purchased this corded Makita hammer drill to drill a couple of holes through my sidewalk to route some liquid tight conduit for a patio solar project. I had major problems with this drill from the get-go. The chuck wouldn’t stay tight. Also had to wear work gloves because the drill quickly got crazy hot to the point where it was burning my hands. Took a brief break to grab a cold drink then went back to drilling. Within a few minutes, smoke started pouring out of the motor housing, and that was the end of this drill. Didn’t even last me one full day of use. Ended up returning it on my first day of ownership. Avoid!
