Questions & Answers

I live in Zone 8a (Virginia Beach). Can this variety tolerate morning shade and afternoon sun? Is it somewhat resistant to spot fungus? Thanks.

Answer This Question

Hi Molar1 Thanks for asking! While panicle hydrangeas are the most sun tolerant of all the hydrangeas, we still recommend morning sun and afternoon shade in southern climates. We live in Zone 7 (Oklahoma specifically). Can Limelight Hardy Hydrangea survive in full sun spot from the morning until 2 PM?

      Answer This Question

Hi Tucau Thanks for asking! Panicle hydrangeas are the most sun tolerant. Limelight hardy hydrangeas is hardy in zones 3-9. It should do very well in your zone 7 garden with that amount of sun. This extremely durable, long-lived plant is easy to grow. It likes full sun in cold climates, afternoon shade in warmer ones, but it does require well-drained soils that do not remain soggy for any amount of time. To prune, simply cut back by one-third its total height every spring. Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in Spring. Answer This Question

Hi Susan Thanks for asking! Panicle hydrangeas should be pruned in early spring as the new growth is emerging. Cut back by 1/3 of its total height. Laura from Garden Answer does a great job showing the pruning method in this video: Pruning Panicle Hydrangeas // Garden Answer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd3AuBso30U As always, please feel free to reach out to us at any time with any plant questions or concerns. I was hoping to order the Limelight Hydrangeas (in July) and place them in a container in the front of my house which receives the northwest sun in zone 6a, then depending on the result transplant to the ground in the fall. Do you think that is wise?

Hi Elaine - Limelight is an extremely durable, long-lived plant that is easy to grow. It likes full sun in cold climates, and afternoon shade in warmer ones, but it does require well-drained soils that do not remain soggy for any amount of time. Temporary plantings in containers can work well to get roots established and transplant into the landscape to allow for more growth and development. Yes. I also kept mine in a pot. I actually left it in that pot all winter in 7A. You will be fine so long as you give it a couple weeks to root into the ground before the first hard freeze. You can probably plant these any time of year but to be safe just make sure the ground is workable. These plants are nearly indestructible. And within a couple years you will be thrilled with it in the ground with plenty of room. Mine is on its 3rd year and already six foot wide and tall with tons of blooms.

Just mix 50/50 garden soil and nature current soil , set root ball higher then ground level 1-2 inches, that's it, this one is easy plant, around 3rd year will enjoy it full bloom

Hello Aana-- Thank you for your review. Shocked ... happily so!
The idea of ordering a hydrangea- or any plant - online was alien to me. How could this possible end well? But I really wanted Limelight variety and no garden center had any left. I rolled the dice and ordered. Wow! Was I surprised ... came fast, awesome packaging- vibrant, lush green plants in perfect condition. So happy!!

I received the three Limelight Hydrangeas in great shape very quickly after ordering. Gave them a drink, waited about a week before planting. Planted them four days ago. They seem to be very happy in their new home. Can’t wait for spring. I live in Central Florida.

                          Sad little plant
Encouraged by the pictures of other reviewers showing fluffy, healthy plants I thought I would give the mail-order plant business a try. I'll concede that its hot up and down the interior of the United States at the moment and made sure to retrieve this little guy from the porch upon arrival - but the heat isn't the sole reason this plant is tiny and twig-like. I will be sticking to picking out plants at the store in the future.

                              Exceeded my expectations!
I ordered a 1 gallon Proven Winners Limelight hydrangea on August 6th. And it came August 10th. Prompt delivery, plant was full and big. In great condition considering the heat outside. Perked right back up after watering. I'm giving it 5 stars already just on product when it was delivered.
