We decided to go with this style shower to be...
We decided to go with this style shower to be as close to a tile shower as possible. It has met our expectations, was fairly easy to install for an amateur & when finished look great. We are happy in our decision to go with this shower and happy with its durability.

          shower pan squeaks
I bought a complete kit to replace a alcove tub. Hired a great contractor who installed it with great care. Took special interest in ensuring that the floor was level for the pan. He was a little surprised to see that the shower pan was a hard shell over styrofoam. It's those two things rubbing together that squeak every time you take a step or shift your weight. Maax customer service said without a hint of concern or embarrassment "Oh, yeah, it does that. That's the design". "Will it get any better?" I asked hopefully. "Probably not", said Maax. I read online a guy vibrated talcum powder between the styrofoam and plastic shell and that stopped the squeaking but I don't know of the long term story on how that turned out. My shower is already installed so it will be a little hard to do that. I think the shower pan is a poor design and wish I had never bought it. It was a reasonable price ($350?) for the pan so that should have set off alarm bells. I would have happily paid an additional $300 for the non-squeak version - Maax do you hear that?...probably not if you're in the shower pan factory, what with all the squeaking. I

            great product, long wait
Extremely well built fiberglass panels. Very solid and durable. Be wary of colours online and in brochures though. Demand to see samples before ordering. Colours online are deceiving. Also expect a min month wait. Not 14-21days

              Not for retrofit
What Maax does not tell you until you get the box is that this system is for 2005 building codes. We have a house from the 1980's and we're taking out a tub enclosure to put this in. Well, the base may be 32, but you will need about 33-34 inches for the overhang of the flange of the side walls. Unless you are going to rip out all the existing drywall, redo some of your structure to match that of what their system wants, it isn't worth it. I have never owned a house with perfectly straight walls, but this system demands perfectly straight or the grout lines do not match up. When I called the Maax centre they were not that helpful (after waiting on hold for over 1/2 hour). It is a quality product; however, it is misleading. Installation 1 day? Ha. the prep work took over a week to get the system to work. We installed it in about 2 days and it is heavy. Now we have finishing work, which Maax does not give instruction for. How are you suppose to drywall over plastic coated fiberglass? If you have a preexisting system, it may be easier to just tile it. If you can get past the pain of installing it or if you have a new build this looks and feels like a sturdy and good system. Do not go into this project thinking you will get done in a weekend though, unless you are a professional. Just my 2 cents.
