Thank you for reaching out to us, Charles. These cement boards screws are not designed to penetrate or hold in metal studs. They are meant for wood studs only. Hope this helps.

Can these be used like a tapcon if I pre drill? I want to install over painted concrete chimney block as a base for cultured stone to stick to, since the block is painted.

          Answer This Question

Hi there, we do not recommend using these screws in place of Tapcon concrete anchors. For this application we do recommend you use Tapcon anchors, they do come in blue and white if you need a better color match.

Backer-On screws are the only screws I use to secure HardieBacker fiber cement boards, so I apply a custom, decorative cementitious overlay. Giving any part of a home a 'feature wall'. But in a bathroom, they can really look amazing. For this wall in a very large living room, per instructions 1.5 boxes, secured 6 sheets of 1/4" hard backer. Then a special fiber mesh over the seams, to prevent cracking, and making the whole wall 1 large surface with 2 base coats of Rapid Set's - One Step material. Then three 1/8th" thin coats, steel troweled, with sanding in between. Giving the final surface a 'velvet' look, that's incredibly smooth to the touch.

Used these to hang 1/4” cement board overtop our drywall for an accent wall project. Drilled into the studs, they will not work if installed just into the drywall

These are excellent screws for attaching backer board to either wood or metal studs. They seat flush and hold securely. They come with T25 bits so no need to buy separately.

Excellent Screw for any backer board
Every screw is perfect. Of course when I hit a nail head underneath then the screw cannot penetrate, but that was rare. This screw made the entire backer board project ALMOST fun! The tip easily penetrates, and the screw head has a digging action which makes the flush setting that-more-easier.

These screws were easy to use and work well with the Hardibacker board. They drive down into the board well making it easy to level tile without a screw sticking up proud of the surface.

These screws worked as expected. Most screw heads countersunk the first time. The screws that were still exposed above the surface were my fault for stop driving them short. When I found the exposed heads they went in deeper with a little more effort with the impact driver.

Forget it if you wanna put 1/2” hardie board
Cheap and flimsy. It won’t go through and lots of energy to work with. Should have stick with GRKs. Wanted to try these but now I know what a junk they are.
