How does the semi transparent compair to transparent

    Answer This Question

Hi BigCheese, thanks for reaching out with your question. Our transparent finishes will give your wooden surface the protection it needs while still showcasing its full natural beauty and allowing the wood grain to be fully visible. Our semi-transparent finish will provide some color coverage on the surface while still allowing some of the wood grain to be visible, they also provide a slightly longer lifespan than our transparent finishes. Please feel free to reach out to us directly if you have any other questions. - Angie

Does your semi-transparent stain work well for outdoor stairs (they will be new)? If so, does it matter what color I choose? How long will it last before having to be redone?

            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hi Mike, thank you for your question. The Semi-Transparent Wood Stain and Sealer can be used on new wooden stairs in the color of your choice. To prep the wood, use the All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 and allow it to dry completely. The stain is guaranteed 6 years on decks, which would be similar to stairs. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

Super great “stain” behr in mind that it isn’t transparent, but it makes unfinished cedar nice and last for years and years out in the weather.

The stain was very easy to use and it went on nice , added a great addition to the new trailer still to early to see how it holds up with the weather element as i only had it for about 1 month.

                Disappointing
I did everything right even powered washed the deck even though it was less than a year old with cedar plank. I ended up having to buy 6 of these because it soaked in so quickly. Stain didn’t even last a year. Came to wash it down this year and the stain peeled off like it was paint. I now have patches that require redoing so will have to pay a contractor again. Very disappointed

Hi Whittf1, thanks for taking the time to post a review. I'm sorry to hear about the peeling on your deck. To fix this, I recommend sanding to remove the peeling stain, cleaning with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner to promote adhesion, and applying two coats of stain following the spread rates. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we'd like to help get your project back on track. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can further assist. NOT Clear Transparent
This is NOT CLEAR Transparent. It adds a cedar yellow brown finish. Goes on nicely, but does NOT dry clear. Very disappointed to ruin hand cut clear redwood which now looks like cedar.

                  Response from BehrAug 18, 2026
Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear your project doesn't look as expected. We want you to be happy with your project, and we're here to help. To avoid any confusion, we want to mention that Clear refers to the opacity, not the color. Similar to how gelatin is clear but can come in a variety of colors. Our Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish offers UV resistance for a long-lasting finish, but that can give surfaces an amber appearance. If you're looking for a colorless finish, it may be best to remove the stain before recoating the surface with a wood stain that doesn't provide UV protection. We value your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our Customer Care team is happy to help! Behr
                    Disaster
I was using the "clear/transparent" waterproofing to seal some blue pine siding T&G for the front of a house. I bought the product assuming it was clear/transparent, as the label says. It certainly is NOT. There was a dramatic color change to the pine. The contractors applied the product to the entire area without knowing any better, and the wood is now ruined. I believe it will be more cost effective to remove and replace the entire siding. This is a very costly mistake, and misleading labeling.

                    Response from BehrAug 17, 2026
Hi Josh, thanks for your review. I'm sorry to hear that our coating has left a dramatic color change on your surface. This isn't how we expect our product to perform, so I understand your disappointment. Our transparent clear stain requires a bit of tint to help protect your wood against UV and fading. However, the slight tint should not appear extremely amber or yellow. Since it sounds like the finish is not to your liking, I suggest removing the coating by sanding, stripping, or power washing at a low setting and applying a new coating in the color of your choice. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can apply a solid color stain over your current coating. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance. Our customer care team is happy to help you! -Angie Behr

I have used this line up of Behr product for at least 8 yrs. I have a log house that I used the semi transparent cedar tone on 8 yrs ago. It is now showing signs of needing redone in another year or two. Last year I did a chicken coup with same product. The clear I just applied on some cedar decking. I also applied to the porch ceiling. The product is very easy to brush or roll on. I have also have ran it thru a airless sprayer. Product clean up is water based so it is very easy. The price seems to be inline with other brands. Durability seems to be pretty accurate as labeled on can. I am in michigan so I do not get the extreme sun that other areas of the country would. It dries quickly and did require at least 2 coats.

                      High quality, high cost
Very good product. However it is one of the most expensive stains out there. I wish HD offered it in 5 gallons. They’re out of stock, forcing me to buy several individual gallons which is expensive. I’m going to need over 7 gallons total to finish my fence. It does appear pretty orange at first, but I don’t mind bc I know stains fade over time, so it will likely hold up pretty well.

I used this paint for my wooden fence around my back yard. The fence was about 6 years old already and was beginning to show age from the elements. This paint exceeded my expectations. Really made the fence look brand new. Gives it a nice seal and smooth finish. Highly recommended.
