How are they for landscaping and filling in a flowerbed? I am in zone 10 and want to plant them around a tree
ByApr 3, 2017

Answer This Question

Hi GardenNovice, Supertunia Bordeaux is a great plant for any landscaping job or flower bed. Its plentiful blooms will trail up to 2.5 feet, making it great for filling in spaces in the garden. In zone 10, you may even be able to keep these coming back year after year, with the right conditions. Make sure that when planting it under a tree, the flowers can still get 4 or more hours of sunlight a day. If you have further questions, feel free to call us at 734-654-7485. Hope this helps! Asia

how many are needed to fill basket ?

    Answer This Question

Hi veeloy, Our best guess is that there are three to four mature plants shown in the basket photo. To achieve this look, it may take some weeks before they fill out. Also, you should water and fertilize your Supertunias consistently to get the best performance from them. If you have any questions please call our hotline at (734) 654-7485. Best regards, Fallon

Hi tennisgirl, The Supertunia Bordeaux Petunias only come back year after year in zones 10-11. In every other zone, the winters get too cold and these petunias are considered annuals, meaning they won't come back the next year. To find out what your hardiness zone is, you can search for the USDA Hardiness Zones Map and type in your address. This will give you a better idea if you are in a zone where this plant would be considered a perennial. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call our hotline at (734) 654-7485. Thanks, Hailee

            I'll do this again
The petunias arrived very quickly and were in excellant shape even after having been shipped in Texas in summer. It arrived as a healthy plant, blooming when it arrived, and the color was as vibrant as the picture shows. I was impressed with the shipping container and custom cardboard inserts to secure the plants and protect them. This is not the same experience I have had with previous mail order plants from other sources, where the plants were half dead and conventional shipping materials like styrofoam peanuts were used. I have bought a lot of Proven Winner plants in the past from the nurseries and Home Depot garden center around here, and these are as high quality as those were. I will do more buying mailorder like this based on this experience.

            Nice plants
Even though the package was delivered sideways, the plants were packed well enough to survive the rough treatment :)

            Zone 6....Springfield, MO
Beautiful! Used as a border in flower garden and I watered daily giving liquid fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks or so. They were in direct sun all day throughout the summer and they grew beautiful with no real care needed. Will be buying more next year.

            Hi AWard24,
Thank you so much for the great compliments! I love hearing how much our gardeners are enjoying our plants and products. I see in your writing that you are fertilizing every 2 to 3 weeks. Have you thought of making your gardening simpler by trying our Proven Winners Premium Continuous Release Plant Food? This is a unique 6 month formulation which feeds plants continually throughout the growing season with only one application and can be ordered online as well through Home Depot. Thanks again AWard24!

              Big disappointment!
After reading some comments about these 'Supertunias', and how easy they were to grow, we thought they would be perfect to add some color to our yard, here in southwest Florida. In May, we ordered one each of the Bordeaux, Lavendar Skies, and Vista Silverberry, thinking these would be enough to fill in a small area of one of our island beds. Ordering and delivery was no problem. They arrived a few days later, and we did think the plants were on the small side, but figured if they grow as fast as reported, this would be OK. We planted them, following the instructions, with the slow release fertilizer, and watered them in. The bed gets full sun most of the day. After a week, they looked pretty much the same. A few more flowers had opened, but no signs of new growth. Still, we kept them watered, checked them daily, and waited...and waited...and waited...! By the end of June, the Bordeaux was starting to die off in the center, so my wife trimmed it a little. Lavendar Skies had done nothing, and was still laying prone. Vista Silverberry looked a bit better, but, as it is supposed to be a taller variety, had not grown in height. July came and went with no improvement, and by the end of the month all three had gone. It's hard to even see any signs of them. So we now still have a bare, colorless patch in an otherwise pretty island. The Ti plant, bougainvillea, plumbago, ruellia, and vinca are all doing well. We also have a regular purple petunia in a hanging basket, on a Shepherd's Hook, that my wife bought in February. That has had a couple of 'haircuts', and is still flowering well. Maybe these 'Supertunias' would be OK for a planter, as temporary annual color, but we are not impressed, and think many of the positive reviews are misleading.
