Questions & Answers

Can you paunt it

Answer This Question

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, We have reached out to the manufacturer and their answer is,"Thank you for the inquiry. Yes, this planter can be painted and the material needed can be found in the Paint Dept. of your local Home Depot store. You will need to make sure the surface is clean and dry, then you can use an aerosol paint of your choice. We recommend Paint & Primer to eliminate the need for priming. Then we recommend using a sealer top coat to protect your work. Due to the fact this is a cement-like material, and the original color finish is achieved by stains, we recommend using a waterproofing layer on the inside to prevent the paint job from failing from any airflow or moisture that may come from inside the planter. Then it is important to make sure the planter has proper drainage which can easily be drilled with a standard wood/metal drill bit. We recommend then using about 2 inches of rock across the bottom of the planter with a layer of landscape fabric on each side to ensure the drain holes do not get clogged. Please don't hesitate to reach back out with any additional questions."

Several users have mentioned chipping after a year or less. Would painting a clear polyacrylic prevent this from happening?

    Answer This Question

Hi Philly820, the chipping that you are referring to is related to an isolated finish failure issue that a small number of planters have experienced. The process you're inquiring about won't hurt any finished product that breathes like a cement or clay garden container does, but may not be a complete solution by itself. I would recommend adding a complete waterproofing layer to the inside of the garden container in addition to the outer layer you're thinking about.

Will this item hold a small amount of water for plants
      ByDec 23, 2023

      Answer This Question

Hi Tomm, this planter does not come with a pre-drilled drainage hole incase someone wanted to use it indoors and there would not be any leaking onto the floor. So, it is supposed to hold water. You will want to inspect the planter for any pre-existing damage that might prevent it from holding water, and you may want to spray a waterproofing liner into the container to ensure your desired use, but you shouldn't have any issues.

Hi, is there a drip tray that will fit under this box?

        Answer This Question

Hi BostontoNC, at the moment we do not have any Saucers that are designed to pair with this Deck Box. When searching please use the footprint specs of 24" x 11" to determine the best product for your needs. We will be looking to manufacture and supply a saucer for this product in the future.

I bought these two years ago and there were no other sizes available at Home Depot anyway.

Would this be appropriate for and contain bamboo?

                  Answer This Question

I love these boxes for flowers but would not put bamboo in them as the roots expanding may crack the boxes.  They are made with fiberglass enforced plaster/ceramic type material.  I drilled larger  holes in the bottom for drainage and it didn’t take much to punch through them.

I would not recommend this product. I bought eight of them and they are discoloring and they have mold on them that I have continue to try and scrub but I live in the south so that may be the problem with the mold. I don’t think this product is worth the money that they charged.

Hi Holly, this container would be nice with Bamboo. The main thing you will want to monitor is the height of the Bamboo. Any live good that grows too tall for the container increases the likelihood of raising the center of gravity such that it can easily tip over. Additionally, we recommend using landscape fabric and an approximate 2 inch layer of rock in the bottom to ensure proper drainage. This will also aid with a counterweight to allow for taller plant growth. Please do not hesitate to reach back out with any additional questions. In response to the Community Answer, this product is a composite Cement material and is resin free. Thus will weather similar to Terracotta, Cement and Stone materials when exposed to the elements.

                        Answer This Question

Hi Jane, thank you for your inquiry. Yes, this planter is weather resistant and is tested to withstand freezing temps. With that said, it is important with this garden container, as with most, that there is proper drainage. So if using outdoors, we recommend that along with drainage holes that a combination of landscape fabric and an approximate 2 inch level of a porous medium such as rock is placed in the bottom of the container to ensure proper drainage. Please don't hesitate to reach back out with any additional questions.

Would these be okay with 4 clncrete blocks inside? Maybe 50 pounds total? Id like to use these to hold a 4x4x8 post, to hang lights from.

Hi DIYer, thank you for the inquiry. I would measure the opening of the Deck Box Planter in comparison to the Concrete Blocks that you're planning on using. There is an approximate 3/4 inch lip that reduces the opening for the blocks to fit. Beyond that, I don't see any issue with it, other than the fact you will not be able to move it afterwards without the likelihood of damaging the container due to the overall weight.

                              Good for the orice
I’ve purchased 4 of these deck boxes 3 years ago, which mostly held up nicely. Only one of them randomly started cracking & white paint is chipping off. They are light weight & not the highest quality planter, but I would say they are fairly priced. I originally drilled drainage holes in the bottom & planted bougainvillea, but I wouldn’t recommend that as the bougainvillea roots ended up growing out the bottom. I’ve since purchased 2 more boxes & swapped out the bougainvillea for roses.

Beautiful pot. Light enough to make it easy to move but meanwhile looks rich. Have purchased 16 of those already making it a nice long wall at the end of backyard.

I've bought 5 of these - and plan to buy more. They're really great looking and seem well built. They look like they'd be heavy, but they seem to be some kind of composite fiber material that makes them REALLY lightweight! The videos from the manufacturer says you can fill the bottom with plastic bottles to save on potting soil, but I wouldn't do that. With how light these are, it would make it really top-heavy and prone to tipping. My only criticism is the stone paint on the outside flakes off really easily. I had a few that were dirty from sitting out in the weather and when I sprayed them with my garden hose, the paint flaked off in places to reveal a yellowish material underneath. So, if you get these, make sure you treat them carefully to preserve the finish! Other than that, I really like them!

                                Perfection in a planter
Absolutely obsessed with this planter ! I bought three to liven up a walkway on the side of our house and they are the perfect height, fit for the narrow area. I pre drilled three drainage holes in the bottom of each with a 1/2” bit. I placed a nice layer of rocks and mulch at the base and each one took an entire bag of potting soil ( the big ones) Trying to see where i can place more!!!

I bought two of these. I love the size, shape and color. They do not last. Both have completely cracked all over the surfaces and look very sad. After only one year I am already looking for replacements. Save yourself the time and money and get a better material.

                                    First winter- cracked and chips
I was originally extremely happy with these large planters, but for the price I am disappointed in the quality after only 7 months and one Ohio winter (temps did not drop below the 0 degrees F these are rated to) one of the planters is chipping and cracking badly. The construction underneath is a different color making these chips super obvious. The other planter is fine, seems to be a quality control issue in their constructions.
