Can this be used in a paint sprayer?

    Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up, Timothy! To ensure proper coverage and penetration, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain with either a brush or a clean, lint-free cloth. A sprayer may not allow for a heavy enough coat, and this stain should not be thinned. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

        Answer This Question

Happy to help, Dann! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain can be applied to plywood, the final appearance will be dependent on the condition of the surface, as this stain will still allow the wood grain and pattern to show through. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Do ai need to apply wood conditioner with this product first?

          Answer This Question

Great question! If applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain to a softer wood, such as pine, we do recommend applying a wood conditioner before staining for the best results. We recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Wood Conditioner. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-8-oz-Wood-Conditioner-342085/305587137 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can teak oil be applied over dried stain?
            ByJul 8, 2026

            Answer This Question

Great question, Sandy. Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain and Rust-Oleum Watco Teak Oil are both penetrating products. While Teak Oil can be used after staining the wood, it is key to not flood the pores of the wood and that all excess oil is removed from the surface after letting it dwell for a few minutes. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-Quart-Teak-Oil-in-Clear-A67141/100154957 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I have the same problem, is there a sealant I can apply?

              By|Jul 29, 2026

Let's see if we can clear things up, Phil. If Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain has not yet dried after 3 days this likely means not all the excess stain was removed after applying. To remove the remaining excess stain take a rag lightly dampened with mineral spirits and buff the surface. Once all the excess is wiped off the surface it will be able to dry. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

                  Answer This Question

James, happy to help! Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain can be applied exterior to wooden surfaces as long as Rust-Oleum Varathane Spar Urethane is applied over as a final coat. Please keep in mind that the Rust-Oleum Varathane Spar Urethane will periodically need reapplication. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Outdoor-Spar-Urethane-250241H/100165652 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Love this color stain. I used it on large cedar birdhouses and it looks great! Color was exactly what I expected!

I have some wood outside furniture that I have had for over 10 years. The sun and winter rains take their toll, causing peeling and the clear coat to grey out, over time. This wood stain works wonders to restore the intended dark color. I prep the surfaces by sanding and were it is most worn, taking it down to the wood. I use a rag to apply it and you can wipe off excess, or built up the tone you want with several coats. I usually seal it with a water based poly coat + satin stain and they look brand new again.

This is redundant... I just reviewed the Jacobean that I ordered with this. I needed a nice dark/light contrast and the Golden Pecan was a great complement. A friend of mine was building a patio-style backyard picnic table for me. I ordered the stains online and it showed up at his house from the closest store within a few hours.

                    Turned Alder Bright Orange
Tried using this stain to match an existing barn door and it turned knotty alder wood bright orange instead of the advertised medium brown tone. Had to finish with Varathane Briarsmoke to cool down the orange tone. Not impressed with this product.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experinece. Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain is semi-transparent, the final coor will be heavily dependent on the condition and type of wood. Since Early American is a warmer tone, it can highlight warmer tones that exist in the wood.
