I am using the chocolate oil-based stain on a deck on a summer cottage. I applied the stain using a roller and 6 days later it does not appear to be cured because it comes off on my feet when I walk on our deck. This doesn't seem normal what should I do?

What’s the shelf life for remaining product in an opened can?
          ByMay 23, 2025
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Hi David, thank you for your question. Our products do not have a guaranteed shelf life once they have been opened, as it will depend on how the container is stored. For the best results, I recommend ensuring the lid is sealed tightly and storing the container in a temperature-controlled area. You can also place a layer of plastic wrap between the lid and the container to help keep the leftover paint fresh longer. Enjoy the rest of your day! -Christina

Hi Ernie, thank you for your question. It sounds like you are asking how long each of our stains will last. Great results!
Super easy to work with! My only advice would be, if multiple people are helping with your project, have them all use the same tool to apply the stain. We tried a foam roller, a paint brush, and the Behr pad. All different results. Had to go over the deck again with the pad since that gave us the best finish

                      Florida weather ready.
We had a new 6 month old deck. Decided to go with a semi dark oil based stain and sealer to adequately protect our deck from the Florida weather elements. The product went on very smoothly and evenly. Dried fast. 2 coats. The color looks fantastic. Clean up was easy.

I’m a pro and this was by far the best.
I am actually staining over a five year old stain an seal. I was afraid it wasn’t going to stain over but it is doing a amazing job.

I’ve stained miles of fence and deck in my lifetime,...
I’ve stained miles of fence and deck in my lifetime, using many different products and methods. I really like how this goes on, how it soaks in, how it looks, and how easily it cleans up for an oil. Even on raggedy unmaintained west-facing cedar only 2 coats are needed to restore the look.

                        Review on Weathered Wood
First of all, please note that Behr suggests this product for young, healthy decks. My deck is cracked and weathered from years of no care and sun exposure, but I didn’t want to use a thick product that would peel after a year. I’ve used this product on another deck before and it turned out great so I gave it a shot with the bad deck. I prepped the deck with cleaner and power washing. I applied the product fairly heavily with a sponge brush on the railing and using a 3/8” nap roller for the floor boards. I found I had to do two coats on the floorboards to get an even and deep color, likely because the floor boards were just soaking up the product like crazy. The entire project on my large deck took about 5 gallons. My deck looks much better and so long as the product fades evenly as it has on the other deck I used it on, I’ll be very happy! Another thing I love about this product is it is super easy to clean off your skin, just soap and water with no stain left over.

                          NOT HAPPY
Always thought Behr was a good product but after getting this stain for a new deck build we are not happy at all. this is a 600+ sq ft deck and it has taken us two coats to seal it. then if anyone or the dogs walks across it with dirt it stains the deck and washing will not get the dirt stain to come off. deck was cleaned, prepped and let dry before it was stained.

                          Hi Clay,

Thank you for review. I'm very sorry to hear about the coverage and dirt pick-up issues experienced, as it isn't typical or what we want our customers to go through. Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner is great at removing tough stains. Please contact Behr's Customer Care Department for further assistance with this matter. We'd love to find a way to help.

                          Kindest regards,

                          Doris Behr
