Russ, Redgard is not required on DensShield Tile backer. However, if you overdrive the screws or dent, scratch the grey facer, we recommend you seal those areas before tiling.
Thomas, We do not recommend gluing or laminating gypsum boards directly over concrete. We recommend installing furring strips or framing and screwing or nailing gypsum to the furring strips or framing. When installing gypsum boards over wood substrate, you fasten bugle or wafer head, rust-resistant course thread sharp point screw or 11 gauge, galvanized nail.
BillG, DensShield can be used in wet area for tilebacker around a tub or shower. You use thinset latex/polymer modified portland cement mortar. If installed corrected, not additional waterproofing needed, unless installing it as a steam room.
