Questions & Answers

I generate a significant amount of sawdust, (oak, walnut and cedar), will this work if I mix in enough 'green' such as grass clippings along with kitchen waste?
ByMar 17, 2024
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Yes, the Exaco 113-Gallon Aerobin 400 Composter will work with sawdust from oak, walnut, and cedar, as long as you mix it with enough "green" materials like grass clippings and kitchen waste. Sawdust is considered a "brown" material, meaning it's rich in carbon. "Green" materials are rich in nitrogen. A proper balance of brown and green materials is crucial for successful composting.

I would like to know if I can add waste from the chicken coop to the compost bin in order to make the compost more nutrient rich for the garden. Thanks
ByNov 10, 2023
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Chicken coop waste, including manure and bedding, can be a valuable addition to your compost, adding nitrogen and other nutrients beneficial for your garden. However, it's important to manage it properly to avoid potential issues. Avoid adding diseased birds or bedding to your compost. Ensure your compost reaches high temperatures to kill pathogens, and thoroughly mix the chicken waste with other compost materials like brown leaves and yard waste.

Considering getting this composter. Have had a tumbler, but the material inside has not degraded fully even after 2 years. I live in Colorado, 6700 ft elevation. Will the Exaco work here? How does the aerator work? How does it spin?

    Answer This Question

Viva, Yes, it will work perfectly fine as long as you are willing to experiment as to what mixture might work best for you. The Aerobin 400 has been and continues to be the best consumer compost bin on the market (for over 15 years). This particular unit requires no turning due to its unique "lung" in the center of the bin. To better understand how it exactly works study this link please: https://www.aerobin400.com/aerobin400-USA/index.aspx. Additional question, please call us: Exaco - 877-760-8500 ext 702 or 703

Is there a minimum outdoor temperature your compost bins can tolerate? Live in USA, N MN, zone 3. Can we use outdoors and continue to feed it during our winters? Then extract compost in spring when our climate/soil is warm enough to plant?
          ByApr 19, 2023
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

The Aerobin is an insulated 2" thick walls composter - if it is hot going into the winter it generally will keep going. The problem is adding new stuff on a regular basis - the more you open it the colder it will get. Some people prefer to get an other unit so they can use it to collect their organic waste during the freezing months. Feel free to call us: Exaco 877-760-8500 ext 702 or 703.

Easy to put together. Hubby and I did it together without a fight. Great looking. Moved old compost into new compost tote. Looking forward in seeing if this new breaks down waste any faster.

I did extensive research on a number of top-of-the-line models and ultimately decided on this one. I'm very glad that I did. When it arrived I could tell it was high quality because it was way heaveir than I was expecting, not thin flimsy plastic and when I opened it I could tell that each piece was quality, not just the base and walls. Putting it together was simple and quick. Moving it was easy on wheels. I made a cement block base for it to stay flat as the ground moves with the season, and I highly recommend doing that so that it doesn't tip over in wind. At first I thought that I may have gotten too large a unit and maybe should have gone with the 55, but I'm very glad I stuck with this larger one. The aeration is better in this larger one, and I ended up filling it up by interchanging a few inch layers of my end of season crop, household materials, and some grass clippings. The layers helps keep air flowing and a more consistent and even final product. I'm only one season in to my composter so I don't have usable dirt yet, but I could tell the accelerated composting has begun with a simple inspection. Only qualm is the doors, I wish they were a better mechanism to take on/off to avoid losing dirt, but not a big deal. Highly recommend!

I was excited to start composting again and decided to invest in a high-quality, large-capacity compost bin. I especially liked that this didn’t require turning and was rodent resistant. Also, it was easy to build (after I found videos online) and easy to use. I diligently mixed our kitchen scraps—mostly vegetables, fruits, egg shells, and coffee grounds—with leaves before adding it to the bin to maintain a proper greens to browns ratio. Things were going well for the first four weeks or so, but then, the mice moved in! I stopped adding kitchen scraps immediately, and after a few more weeks, the mice moved out. Now, I’ve got to figure out if the bin is returnable/refundable. I would not recommend this composter if you have concerns about field mice or other small rodents.

I am very sorry to hear this. This is a very rare problem. Did they chew a hole or did they get in because the lid was left open (not closed properly)? I have had my own Aerobin 400 for over 13 years - we have a mice and rat problem around the outside of our house but never inside the compost bin. The primary reason they might have entered the bin (somehow) is due to smelling meat (protein) left overs. You are never supposed to put protein in a compost bin. Kitchen scrapes are perfectly fine - that is all we add to ours. If you now have a hole anywhere let us send you new parts, and you can start over. Please trust me, you can prevent the mice problem, and enjoy your Aerobin composter perfectly fine. Of course, you can catch the mice in the first place with a trap (I guess you do not have a cat around). Call us and we will help you: Exaco 877-760-8500 ext 701, 702, 703. Let me assure you the Aerobin still is the best consumer composter on the market. Exacotrading

I haven't had the thing long enough to know if it was worth the money. It is well constructed (for $500, it had better be, right?) easy to assemble, parts fit together correctly. Time will tell if it performs as advertised.

            Don't make this mistake
I like this product. Heavy duty and high quality. It is important you mix dry waste (dry grass, shredded pepper, etc) with your green matter. If not, this won't compost correctly and water will stand on top of the inside bin. Remove side panels to remove composted material.
