I'm not planning to install a garbage disposal, but I am seeking to avoid flooding my floor. In the event that my dishwater didn't drain properly, would backed up water pour out of an air gap into the sink?
Hi, this is Laura with Kohler Co. I am happy to assist you with your question. The air gap works by allowing fresh air into the drain hose if there is a backup causing negative pressure. Typically, the only time water would come out of the air gap is if the garbage disposal has not been run for a while and water backs up in it into the air gap hose. where is the air gap on the dishwasher located
The air gap is not on the dishwasher, but is connected to the drain hose from the dishwasher. My air gap is mounted on the kitchen granite counter near the dishwasher and the sink. It provides back flow prevention for the dishwasher.
The water discharge hose from you dishwasher connects to the side port of this device. One end of another, user supplied hose connects to the bottom fitting of the air gap, with the other end going to the dishwasher fitting on your garbage disposal or another fitting on the sink drain plumbing. The idea is to prevent sewer water being siphoned into the dishwasher.
The air gap for a dishwasher is typically located in one of the sink holes of your kitchen sink. Kitchen sinks traditionally have three holes, but can be ordered with up to five holes in a new installation or replacement project.
It isn’t located “on the dishwasher” - I would recommend you seek professional installation.
