Can joist hangers be used for a deck handrail?
Hi, Dann, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. The HUC won't provide any kind of lateral load resistance, and the better option to me would be our SDWS16300 Framing Screw. Are the floor weight capacities given in the charts calculated as the amount of weight each hanger will hold? If so, the floor weight capacity could be doubled for two hangers and, if not, the floor weight would need to be divided between the two?

Since there isn’t a single concealed 2x dual joist hanger in Southern California, can this one be used with an insert sandwiched between two 2x8s?

You could certainly add a shim to most connections, but please note that the size of the shim and quantity of nails required to transfer load adequately, will be up to the person designing the connection. I would advise instead to using the HUC28-2 concealed joist hanger instead. This can be special ordered from any distributor. Hi, I just need some clarity on the HUC44. Can I use the #10 x 1 1/2 SD screws for the face? What screws should I use for the joist?

What is the load rate and/or how much weight can this joist hanger support?

Is the hole placing the same as the product purchased?
Hello Rain, this is Stacy with Simpson Strong-Tie. The HUC has nail holes that need to be installed through the face and through the joist. The image shown on the Home Depot website shows pilot holes on the edge which are for manufacturing purposes only. The HUC44 actually has 4 nail holes for the face and 2 nail holes for the joists.
