SDS-Plus Tungsten Carbide Rotary Hammer Drill and Chisel Metric Bit Set (17-piece)

I have been surviving with a regular drill bit for most of my DIY work. However, I have discovered the problem with drilling through concrete using a regular drill. This hammer drill set is part of my investment into hammer drills and a better ability to work with concrete. The bits in this set are very good, much better than other masonry drill bits I have used in the past. These are nice and long and durable. The SDS mechanism seems to be rather standard for hammer drills and is easy to attach and remove. This set also includes chisels and other tools suitable for chipping concrete and other demolition work. So far I really have only used the drill bits bit the quality is still very good. The bits even were pretty decent drilling into concrete using a hammer drill (something I needed to do in a pinch), so they all work well. I take one star off as the case could be a little nicer. When I received the kit half of the bits had fallen off and were free inside the case. They also seem to fall off a little more readily than I would have liked. Otherwise these are decent bits. Note that these are SDS bits. They are NOT compatible with SDS-plus and SDS-Max tools. I learned this the hard way. Therefore, make sure that your tool is compatible with SDS bits.

This review is for Xtreme Power US 17-piece Hammer Chisel Drill Bit Set, Product No. 32605-XP. The set comes with a plastic case that organizes the product well. This product is manufactured in China. As respects the SPECIFICATIONS on the packaging, this product does not meet them as far as contents are concerned. There are 12 drills provided in 8 sizes. The sizes marked on the drills are metric, not SAE. The set I have contains two 5.5 mm, one 6 mm, two 6.5 mm, two 7 mm, one 8 mm, one 10 mm, one 12 mm, one 14 mm and one 16 mm drills. These convert to 7/32, 15/64, 1/4, 9/32, 25/64, 15/32, 25/64 and 5/8-inch sizes, respectively. Instead of claimed two bull points there is one 10-inch bull point. Instead of three flat chisels, there are two, one being 7/8-inch wide and the other 1-5/8 inches wide. The set contains a not listed arc-shaped chisel with the arc diameter being about 13/16 inch. I tried several of the drills in tough concrete, they working well. I down-rated this product to average because it is actually marked with metric instead of SAE measurements and because the package does not contain what is stated in its SPECIFICATION. On the other hand, I think it is priced well for what you get, and works well enough for the home handyman activities that I do routinely, recommending it on that basis.

This 17-Piece set is just barely OK, lacking in quality. They come in a well-organized plastic case. What the package says is NOT what’s in the case. Packaging and description say the Drill bits included are in inches by 1/64 in. increments, but these are metric. There are 13 bits, but 2 of the 6 in. length are the same size (7mm). Packaging says there are 12 drill bits but, as the description says, there are 13. Packaging says there are 3 flat chisels, but there are 2. It says there are 2 bull point chisels but there is only 1. Description says there is 1 groove chisel, which there is, but packaging says nothing about it. I checked the size of each one just to confirm that the numbers marked are indeed metric. What I found was that sizes are quite inconsistent. All except one of them (5.5 x 4 in. which was slightly smaller) are larger than the marked sizes. In almost all cases, they were slightly larger or smaller than the closest fractional equivalent, certainly not in 1/64 in increments. Since they’ll be used in concrete or masonry, it probably doesn’t matter a whole lot, but it would be nice if the sizes were more accurate. As for the Chisel Bits, they are pretty rough. Edges are not ground evenly, and the ¾ in. one is extremely rough. The groove chisel is very rough with obvious casting defects. Again, like the drill bits, since they’ll be used with concrete and masonry, and all edges will wear, this probably isn’t critical, but a bit more quality control would be nice. Overall, with the quality seen thus far, I have serious doubts about how long any of these bits will last. At this price, I’d consider them barely OK for 1-time use (though not for important projects), and probably disposable after that. I think I’m probably better off spending more for higher quality bits for use with my rotary hammer.
