For safety reasons, we recommend using a non-slip rug pad with any rug that does not already have a non-slip backing, unless you plan to keep the rug securely in place under heavy furniture.
I've put it directly on engineered red oak floor for a few years, no damage to the floor. But it moves. It is very thin, which works perfectly at our front door.
