Q:I want to build a pergola or similar structure over the patio. If the post just sits there in the groove without actually being attached, what makes it stay there during high winds?

A: 'High winds' is a bit ambiguous. Nothing stays put or is guaranteed in hurricane or tornado wings (75+ mph). If you are talking <40mph I would say your fine just sitting posts in piers with the pergola's total weight acting as a ballast. However, the size of the roof, roof design, prevailing wind direction & wind speed will be factors in what effect the roof becomes a wind sail in winds above about 45 mph. So if you are concerned about it lifting or moving in a high wind event you could incorporate an anchoring system with ground stakes & straps as well as attaching lag screws connecting the vertical pergola supports to the frame of the deck.

A: These blocks are intended to support piers not posts. Posts need to be sunk into the ground.

A: I would use this with a heavy structure i.e. shed or a deck that's securely connected to the house, very useful for support in the middle of a project . For a Pergola that isn't connected to your house and has no supports in the middle, I would use a Concrete form like this one. https://www.homedepot.com/p/SAKRETE-8-in-x-48-in-Concrete-Form-Tube-65470075/100321209 they can be cut to length to suit your purposes/budget. Used in conjunction with this, https://www.homedepot.com/p/SQUARE-FOOT-22-in-x-16-1-2-in-x-22-in-Plastic-Concrete-Footing-Form-SF22/202532049 , would be what I would use. This is a more costly way of doing it but you will never have to worry about it, and as always check your local building codes. If you just want to use this block then you might be able to drill holes with a hammer drill vertically for rebar but would probably break the block and/or back fill the hole with concrete using the block to start with will reduce the needed mixed concrete. (never tried it) Hope this helps.

A: If you feel like it, sure.

A: You probably could if you're in an area with a shallow frost line (< 4"), but you'd still need to dig down below the frost line and compact the soil pretty well. Even then it won't be super stable and will be subject to settling and moving. A good concrete footing is still the way to go.

A: I did. used for an 8x8 storage shed so it's fairly small but simply dug into ground and used gravel to level it. Laid 2x4 frame in the blocks and placed shed on it. Great so far, no movement and we've had a lot of rain.
