Q:since this fasteners are being used to join treated pine, should the holes be pre-drilled or can the fasteners be driven directly without fear of shearing off heads when resistance gets too much

      Answer This Question

A:  Bern, this is McKenzie from Simpson Strongtie. Pre-drilling is not required for the Strong Drive SD #9 screws; if you feel that installing the screw may cause the wood to split then pre-drilling would be something to take into consideration. Thanks.

A:  I would say no. They are for joists hangers. Not sure what kind of patio cement or a deck or what l kind of strength the bracket you are mounting needs.

Q:Would you recommend using 1-1/2? or 2-1/2? screws with an ABA44Z base going into a pressure treated 4?X4? post?

                Answer This Question

A:  Hi Joseph, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. You may use the SD#9 1 1/2" (SD9112) or the SD#9 2 1/2" (SD9212) to install the ABA44Z and you will get 100% of the table load (using .148" x 3" nails). Either length will work, so we don't have a preference of using one length over the other. It's whatever you prefer. I'd say it's likely the 1 1/2" which be slightly less expensive vs the 2 1/2". If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

A:  Hello Anon, I am Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. I imagine not too many of our Simpson dealers have the SD9212SS-R100 (100 count) -R500 (500 count) or SD9212SSMB (2,000 count) on their shelves. However, these are available by special order with one of our Simpson dealers. On our home page, strongtie.com, at the top is a Dealer Locator tab. Enter your zip code, filter Wood Construction Connectors, and view the dealers near you. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

A:  I used an impact driver as it is easier, but either would work. Just screw them in so they are snug to the metal. No need to overthink!  Good luck

A:  Hi there, thank you for your message. This is Ricardo with Simpson. We want to make sure we address your concerns regarding our Strong-Drive® SD CONNECTOR Screw. The Strong-Drive SD Connector screw is specifically designed to replace nails in certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and is the only screw approved for that application. The load-rated SD screw has been tested and approved for use in many popular Simpson Strong-Tie products. In certain applications screws are easier and more convenient to install than nails, and the single-fastener load values achieved by the SD screw exceed those of typical 10d common or 16d common nails. In addition, the galvanized coating makes the SD screw ideal for interior and most exterior conditions. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.
