Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Suvarna! Since this is a different manufacture, Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stains may not be a match. Please keep in mind, with any semi-transparent stain, the final color will be dependent on the condition and type of wood you are staining. Another color option is Aged Walnut, but a test application is recommended to ensure favorable results. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Aged-Walnut-Classic-Wood-Interior-Stain-369860/314947347 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

    Answer This Question

A:  While you can use the Rust-Oleum Varathane Interior Wood Stain with a spar urethane, you do run the risk of needing to touch it up down the line, due to the exposure to UV and the elements. Just something to keep in mind! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

A:  Sensitivities to odor can vary, Hurshy. For this reason, we recommend using your judgement, as well as reviewing the safety information located on the can of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain. Please keep in mind that the product does take about 7–10 days to cure, so each day the odor will dissipate, as well as ensuring you have proper ventilation to assist w/this. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

            Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Kimberly. Our Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Penetrating Wood Stain should be applied to bare wood surfaces only. Applying to previously coated surfaces can hinder the penetration, not allowing the stain to fully dry. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

A:  Probably not.. stain needs to be able to attach to the wood fibers. You?ll have to sand away any sealer before staining.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Suzy. Varathane Classic Wood Stain can be applied to an outdoor wooden gate, however the wooden gate must be bare wood and after applying the stain, Varathane Ultimate Spar Urethane must be applied. Varathane Stain absorbs into the wood, Spar Urethane is a clear coating that products the wood from moisture and harmful UV rays. Refer to the Spar Urethane label to see how many coats are required. https://www.homedepot.com/s/varathane%20spar%20urethane?NCNI-5 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Q:I applied the espresso finish to my sanded wood coffee table and it was so much lighter than the stain on the can. Do i need a 2nd coat and will that make it darker? Does each subsequent coat keep getting darker?

                      Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, James. If a darker shade of Varathane Espresso Classic Wood Stain is desired, an additional coat can be applied. Apply the stain across the grain until the wood is saturated on top, allow the stain to remain on the surface a few minutes. Wipe the excess stain off in the direction of the wood grain. Do not let the stain dry before wiping off the excess. If a third coat is desired, wait 2 hours, do not sand stain between coats. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6
