Q:We just had our porch decking replaced with these boards. Is there a specific amount of time to wait for it to dry before staining or just do the water test? I saw a question from several years ago where the answer was to wait a year. What is best?

A:  Atalanta, If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

A:  Steve, We do recommend staining vs painting. Although pressure treated lumber provides a surface that is easier for paints to cover, we do not recommend painting it. Pressure- Treated lumber does not need protection from the elements. But if your decorative decisions call for paint, make sure the wood is dry before application. (Pour some water over the surface. If it beads, wait; if it seeps into the wood, it's ready to paint.)

A:  I used a solid stain on it. It looks good.

A:  I’ve never used paint per se on areas I expect to be seen - always used colored stain which gives the same effect. Where I have painted things like scrap projects, etc. it seems to be a bit less resilient than a penetrating stain.

                      Answer This Question

A:  Hello GE, We don’t recommend gluing treated lumber to make laminated beams because the lumber has to be dry, and the glue has to be of a certain type, etc. It is better to nail, bolt, or lag-screw multiple pieces of lumber together according to established construction standards.

A:  It's is a ground contact board. So yes you can. According to their latest recommendations, Ground Contact should be used when: Wood will come in contact with soil, vegetation, leaf litter, and debris that can hold moisture for extended periods of time. You don’t expect good air circulation, especially on the underside and between decking boards.

A:  Yes, this can be used for ground contact. You can also use it in areas with low ventilation (crawlspace etc.) It will shrink a little after the moisture from treating dries out. Especially if you are in an area with relatively low humidity.
