A:  There is a full-size and a compact size. We found the full-size to be way too big for our family of 4 so took it back and ordered the compact which was just right for our typical grilling. The larger one would be recommended if you are grilling for a crowd.

A:  Not sure - if so, it would be very tight. We do not have our Smokey joe anymore.

A:  It should. I have a VERY LARGE Smoker and a standard size charcoal grill. It lays down just fine in both.

                  by|May 19, 2022

A:  It is too large to lay on the cooking grate and have the lid it. If you remove the cooking grate it can sit on the charcoal grate and the lid will then close.

A:  I do not believe it will fit inside. I do not have mine with me, but it is around twelve inches high and about eight inches across the base and sides without the handle. It may work if the handles were removed. I don't think the Smokey Joe is high enough for it to fit.

A:  Yes, but why would you need to? Its literally just as fast and easy without.

A:  I don't know whether you could use the Match Light charcoal, but I do know that defeats the purpose of having the chimney starter. Match Light will start on it's own, just using a match. The chimney starter was designed so you don't need any starter fluid whether separate from the charcoal or contained within it like with Match Light. All you need is a piece of newspaper at the bottom of the chimney to start the charcoal. This saves the expense of lighter fluid or the additional expense of the Match Light charcoal. All you will need are just plain charcoal briquettes saving money over the very expensive Match Light charcoal.

A:  Sure, but you really don't need to. A little paper (I usually just rip off a portion of the charcoal bag) will get regular charcoal lit without a problem.

A:  You could, but there is a little roll of starter material which works well, tumbleweed bundle. Never have a problem lighting it.

A:  Yes, but its designed so you don’t need lighter fluid/pre-soaked briquettes. A single Weber paraffin cube placed under the chimney filled with briquettes or lump hardwood works best.

A:  The whole point in using a charcoal chimney starter is that you can get away from the nasty flavor that lighter fluid imparts to the food. Regular charcoal and newspaper will do a great job. As far as whether you can use it I guess you can but why would you want to?

A:  Yes, but it is not necessary and defeats the purpose of the chimney cleanly lighting charcoal with no petroleum products. Match Light charcoal contains petroleum products so it will light without any starter. You don't need a chimney if you are using Match Light charcoal.

A:  No - that's the beauty of it. It uses draft, like a house chimney, to aid in getting the charcoals going. If it's windy and/or damp, I may use an ounce or so of vegetable oil drizzled over the charcoals to help, but normally newspaper alone gets it done.

A Weber chimney starter and some crumpled up newspaper or a couple Weber lighter cubes are all you need to keep the off taste of lighter fluid from getting into your meals.

A:  Even though this isn't designed as a fire ring, to hold a fire for long periods of time, it acts like a Dakota fire and is very efficient in burning small chunks of wood because of its draft. The ash sifts to the bottom and is easy to clean by simply lifting by the handle. It will probably burn up/rust out a lot sooner than other fire sources.

A:  In a survival situation, where all I had was that, and someone had a gun to my head keeping me from using the charcoal more efficiently... sure, I'd use it, but I sure wouldn't recommend it for that function. This is designed to help you quickly light charcoal for grilling / smoking...and it does that job VERY well. Said charcoal will burn very hot and very quickly, though, left in there. For a normal camping situation, invest in a good sleeping bag or quilt to keep you warm. Figure out the right cook system for your style of cooking / camping. Don't swap the two unless things have gone very, very wrong.

And as a bonus if you really wanted to I'm sure you could grill on it with some sort of mesh cooking screen and only filling half way. Maybe get a small steak or chicken breast on it, definitely a burger or two.

Once you lit it you could keep adding dry sticks and hunks of fist-sized wood into the chimney. Put up a reflector to break the wind and the heat of this fully flamed chimney, could warm you as it did two of us at just above zero outdoors in the snow, but you'll want to have lots of chopped wood available.
