Misleading website page!
I am VERY DISAPPOINTED about how this tool is advertised on the Home Depot website! It says:
"18V ONE+ Lithium-Ion Handheld Cultivator and runs with an 18V ONE + battery", which led me to think it came with a battery -- I don't have any other small Ryobi tools, so I don't have batteries. But when i got to the store to pick up the package and opened it, there WAS NO BATTERY, so I had to go to the tool dept. and spend another $113 to buy a battery and charger, after already paying $260 for this small power tool. This is RIDICULOUS AND MISLEADING! And here is the picture that is included:

Plastic gears
The hand cultivator was a bit of a disappointment. I bought this for my wife in the fall of 2023 so we didn’t get much of a chance to use it but it seemed like a nice tool for making rows for seeds. This year I had tilled the garden and my wife went to use it and it just made a grinding noise. I took it apart and the gears inside are plastic and stripped and there’s no way to replace them. I’m very disappointed in the quality of this item as I’m a big ryobi person and have most their tools

I used this tiller in a greenhouse with raised flower beds to break up the existing soil and add new soil. I used the hand cultivator one time...one time.. and two of the tines broke off and as of now I have been unable to find replacements. The $100 was NOT a good investment!

I love this compact cultivator
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this compact cultivator! This is the second one I’ve had. The speed dial on my first one broke off somehow but Ryobis customer service is the best and they sent me a new unit! Before my first one broke I used it on a weekly basis. I just planted five large plants with this and it makes digging much less of a hassle. Anything to help with this heat is appreciated. This is one of my favorite products that Ryobi makes because it is one of a kind. I don’t think any other company makes a compact cultivator. The unit may stop now and then when a rock gets caught in the tines but will power right back up once it’s removed. I can’t say enough about this compact cultivator!

Teeth wear down quickly
The design of this tool has one gear of teeth power the other through physical contact. This contact between one gear of teeth and the other causes the metal teeth to wear down extremely quickly. I have put less than an hour of use on this tool. By my guestimate the teeth would likely break after only 8 or 10 hours of use.
I had to repeatedly remove small roots every 2 or 3 minutes as they wrap around the gears so half the time you're churning soil, the other half disassembling it to clean it.

Great tool
I got this tool because my wife and I live in a townhome with a small patio. It has a small area that is dirt and we like to plant flowers there. The soil is very hard and compact so it makes it difficult to plant in it. We break our backs digging it up with shovels. It's to small to get a big tiller in there. That's where this tool comes in. It's small compact hand held and it turns the soil real easy and make it easy to plant. I love it and would recommend it. It comes with a battery and charger but no bag or a case unfortunately.
Finally, a handheld cultivator for my garden. Using the larger machines never did the job right. Too powerful and just never worked for me. The Ryobi handheld cultivator is just what I needed for my smaller raised flower beds. It comes with everything you need, but since I have many Ryobi products, the battery is interchangeable between all the machines. Very easy assembly and easy to use. There are three speeds, so pick the right one to use. Gardening just got easier!
This is a great tool for loosening or digging a hole in soil to either plant grass or planting in your garden. The tool is ambidextrous because the handle can be installed on the right or left side. The assembly was straight forward but make sure that the round spring clip is installed on the right axle where the spike is installed. The motor has three settings for easy or compacted soil. The 18v 2aAh battery is enough power to keep you going for a long time. The clear safety shield is great to keep debris away from the operator and the battery takes approximately two hours to charge.
Great tool you never knew you needed for teh garden
The Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless 5-inch Compact Battery Cultivator is that tool you didn’t know that you needed in your garden. Sure, you can do cultivating between plants and vegetables by hand or with a small cultivating rack. But the ease by which the Ryobi tool does the job is amazing. It is very quiet, almost no noise. The weight is light enough for almost anyone to use. It is designed with a nice amount of length for the battery and handle, so I use that to “reach” into spots further inside my vegetable garden that need attention. It will turn the soil aggressively at the higher speed settings and very manageable at level 1. The tool comes mostly knocked down in great Ryobi packaging (like all their products). There is about 3-5 minutes of assembly. The one piece of advice is to push the screws in hard for the handle. At first 2 of the 3 screws didn’t bite but when I pushed, they went right in. Everything is very solid, and clean-up is simple. If you have other Ryobi ONE + tools you can save a few dollars getting only the tool. Overall, it is a nice addition to the garden shed.
The Ryobi 18 volt cordless 5-in compact battery cultivator comes well packaged to prevent transportation damage. The assembly of the cultivator was very simple. A great feature of the battery is a gauge indicating how charged the battery is. The battery comes partially charged; fully charge before using.
It works very well to cultivate small areas by hand. I would recommend this product.
This seems like a well built cultivator so far. It has a safety switch, multiple speeds, and uses any ryobi 18 volt battery. I am planning to use it for weeding and to furrow for planting seeds. The sandier the soil the better this will work but that is true of any cultivator or tiller. The tines are easily removable and seem heavy duty and well made. The handle and safety guard need to be attached to the cultivator with 7 small screws.
I received my 18-volt handheld Ryobi cultivator today; this cultivator was very easy to assemble.
I like the large front guard that stops the dirt from getting thrown all over, and it has a handy top-mounted handle. The handgrip is rubberized, allowing for reasonable control.
This handheld cultivator is powerful and has a speed control dial to slow it down or speed it up.
This is a convenient cultivator for small jobs that works surprisingly well in small areas.
Labor saving handheld cultivator for small gardens...
RYOBI ONE+ 18V Cordless 5 in. Compact Battery Cultivator with 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger is helpful in home gardening. Turning over soil before planting for smaller gardens is usually done manually with a hand tool cultivator. The tool is like a fork with tines used to breakup the soil and remove debris. A small battery operated handheld cultivator is a new concept. This handheld tool is for those who have small areas to turn the soil where larger motorized cultivators are impractical. The larger power ones are normally where you walk behind them, impractical for small areas. I found this tool efficient, did a good job in my garden vegetable patch. It has a three speed motor that spin and dig the tines into the soil. It's ideal for small areas around flower beds, and bushes where the tool can get in close. None of the speeds on the tool are too fast making an undo mess, have plenty of power behind them, move through the soil efficiently. The spinning part consist of aluminum tines, two wheels that spin, can move rocks and pebbles, and slices through roots. In spite of his ability, I'd do a quick check for large objects before plowing the furrows for planting.
Assembling the cultivator out of the box is not complicated, took about ten minutes using just a phillips screwdriver and following the instruction's illustrations. The tines are held with threaded knobs and one compression spring that's on the right side. The plastic guard and top handle are then attached with small screws. When finished, just pop in the battery and ready to go. It has a safety button that's depressed to release the trigger, a good idea. Controlling the tool isn't difficult and two hands are used, one on the trigger and the other on the top handle. I had no problem controlling it, and it went well. I was uncertain about a battery operated cultivator, having used my hand tool for years. I found it easy to use and far superior because it's quicker, less laborious, and better than bending over using my hand tools. You still have to bend over or squat to get at ground level, but it goes faster.
Got this one to help my wife with her gardening in the back yard. We have a tough clay soil that gets extremely hard. This tool was able to dig in and loosen up the soil. Granted this is not for a large area, you would likely have a stand up tiller for that. What we have is the small back yard garden, hate to calm it a container garden, it is more along that line than a full up garden. We also have some landscaping to maneuver around so this is perfect for the small places we need it. After the soil is loosened up it works great for mixing everything together.
Although in my hard clay soil it got bogged down I need to remember to let the tool do the work.
Assembly was simple, tiny screws were a pain to deal with. Basically seven screws to attach the handle and guard
What I don't like is having to push the trigger release, I am sure there is some goofy safety regulation requiring it this way. It just takes a bit of getting used to and the speed dial is in a convenient location, quick access with my thumb. Finally someone used the device from the design team, I was starting to loose hope on some of the new designs. For these reviews I am balanced and try to provide relevant information I would like to know before I buy some thing.
My new “Ryobi” 18V Compact Cultivator arrived yesterday at my North Carolina home. It took me about 10 minutes to fully assemble its parts. Then, due to the 18V battery having to charge, I waited until this morning to try out this amazing ideal tool for preparing the small garden area by my house that I’m creating. With the 3-speed dial on the cultivator I found the unit to be easy to control while running. I also am glad that the manufacturer has incorporated a protective guard on this small machine that protects from debris “kicking up”. And since there were lots of old roots in my newly designated small garden area, I found my new unit very easy to clean out these roots. This unit is “as the Ryobi company says” ideal for any small garden area and any avid gardener like I am! I will be getting another one of these to give as a gift to my daughter-in-law who also loves to “garden”. Thank you to the Ryobi company for a splendid “compact design” tool and its accompanying battery!

Compact Battery Cultivator works great!
The handheld cultivator is lightweight, well balanced and easy to use. I've only had it for a few months but and finding it very useful to use in my raised garden beds where other cultivators won't work (they are 27 inches tall...) this tool will make getting the beds ready next spring a breeze!

Broken after second use. Was still under the return window and returned it. If the other reviews are correct, will probably have to return this one as well. Ryobi, make your gearbox gears out of something better. Make it worth the 100 bucks. Ryobi products, in general are pretty good. I use this to mix soil for planting. It only lasted eight wheel barrels.

I thought it would work great but only one side has a gear on it and after about a day and a half stop working, which hoping it would work better I hope Ryobi comes up with a more robust version. Bought it online and I was worried that Home Depot would be difficult. It wasn’t it was just as if I bought it in the store they had all the records I needed
