DIY Summer Porch Refresh

It’s summer 2023, and it’s been over three years since I did a front porch makeover. You may be thinking, “that’s such a long time!” If you’re anything like our household, there’s one main entryway that’s used more than others. For us, we use our backdoor 99% of the time. So our poor front porch gets neglected, but that has now changed!
It was time for a refresh, and this DIY friendly project should give you all the inspo you need to spruce up your front porch to create that perfect summer oasis.

Quick and Easy DIYs
Installing new house numbers can be a modern update to your home, and a very quick DIY. We used this Milwaukee Rotary Hammer and 7/32 Bit to make the holes where our screws would go. The Everbilt five in floating house numbers comes with a template that makes it super easy to know where your holes should be drilled. I taped them together for easy leveling and installation. So easy!

We have a metal front door that I painted black years ago, and I love it. It just needed an upgrade! We installed this bright brass kick plate using an impact driver. This install only required proper measurements so that it was positioned where I preferred, and a level to ensure it was straight. The door also got treated to a new black keyed knob and Defiant Wifi Deadbolt for a contemporary look.

I wanted the porch to have a tranquil vibe, so plants were a must. For some fragrance, I planted these 2.32 qt basil, oregano and parsley. These women’s nitrile gloves helped me get the job done and keep my nails fresh ha.

A couple more of my favorite DIY updates are this outdoor wall light and gliding retractable screen door that will help keep the bugs out and our dogs in. Both of these were very easy to install. The light just called for a swapping out of the previously existing electrical wires and the door only took less than 30 minutes to hang with quick assembly and screwing into the door frame.

A color change gives the space a totally new feeling. I wanted to go with a somewhat traditional look for the ceiling, so I went with this charming shade of blue that’s common on porch ceilings in the south. The color is French Colony in Behr Premium Plus. The floor got a nice brightening up with Behr Premium Plus Blank Canvas, and the door trim and sill are Behr Premium Plus Antique White.

To give the front porch those final feels that I was going for, I made sure to add some pretty planters and plants. I wanted a mix of different planter sizes and types to give some variation. I opted for a Hydrangea, Cordyline, Lavender, and small “Whipcord” Arborvitae. The plants will of course need water, so this expandable hose and hose pot will come in handy.

With these final touches, my front porch has come back to life. The hubs and I have a renewed space to ease our minds and enjoy the tranquility. I hope it has inspired you to make the most of your DIY skills this summer!
