Frequently Asked Questions about Rentals

How do I rent a tool or moving truck?

Stop by your local Rental Center to see what trucks or tools you can rent. If you'd like confirmation before you drive there, call first to inquire about a truck or tool. You can also read our truck rental or tool and equipment rental pages to see if what you need is at your favorite store. For more details on renting tools, read our Tool Rental FAQs, which includes equipment terms and conditions.

Can I rent a tool for a day?

You can rent a tool for four hours or more. Simply choose the length of time that suits you. Small home improvement jobs may only require a rental for a few hours, and we can accommodate large projects as well. You've got options to rent tools by the month, day, or week, too. If you need it longer than anticipated, call your Rental Center for an extension and avoid late fees.

When can I bring the tools back?

It's fine to return the tools early if you finish your project faster than planned, but on-time works, too. As long as you return it by the deadline you were given when you rented it, you'll be good to go. Please clean off dust, mud, and grime from the tool as well. If you need it longer, call your rental center to see if you can extend your rental period.

Can I rent a truck for a few hours?

Rent a cargo van, box truck, or flatbed truck for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes might be plenty. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on how long your project is. Remember to factor in the drive between the job site and the store, as you'll need to return it to the same store where you rented it. Penske moving truck rentals allow one-way rentals as well as round-trip options, and they have different terms. Be sure to read the documentation before choosing your truck.

Do I need to refuel the rental truck when I'm done?

Yes, please fuel up the truck before you return it. Make a note of the original fuel level when you receive the truck, and be sure to fill it with enough gas to match that level. When you don't refill the vehicle, you'll be hit with a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.

Can I rent a truck with only a driver's license?

No, you also need to be 21 or older, in addition to holding a valid driver's license. Depending on your state, you might require car insurance, as well as a deposit or credit card hold, too. We don't accept cash for Home Depot truck rentals, so please bring your credit card. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements, so read those if you plan to rent a Penske truck.
