Frequently Asked Questions about Rentals

How do I rent large equipment, trucks, or tools?

Stop by your local Rental Center to see what trucks or tools you can rent. If you'd like to be sure of what's in stock, call first to inquire about a truck, tool, or large equipment. You may also read our tool and equipment rental or truck rental pages to see if what you need is carried at your local store. For more info on renting tools or large equipment, read our Tool Rental FAQs, which includes equipment terms and conditions.

Can I rent a tool or large equipment by the hour?

Tool rentals and large equipment rentals start at four hour time slots. It depends on how long you'd like to rent them. Small home improvement jobs may only require a rental for a few hours, and major projects aren't a problem either. You've got options to rent tools by the week, month, or day, too. If you need it longer than what you signed up for, call your Rental Center to arrange an extension and avoid late fees.

When do I return the tools?

It's fine to return the tools early if you finish your project ahead of schedule, but on-time works, too. Just make sure to bring them back by the deadline listed on your rental paperwork. Please clean off any grime and dust from the tool as well. If you need the tools longer, call your local rental center to see if you can extend your rental period.

How long can I rent a truck?

Rent a cargo van, box truck, or pickup truck for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes may be enough time. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on the length of your project. Be sure to factor in the drive between the store and the job site, as you must bring it back to the same store you rented it from. Penske moving truck rentals allow round-trip options as well as one-way options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the documentation before you choose a truck.

Do I need to refuel the rental truck when I'm done?

Yes, please fuel up the truck before you bring it back. Make a note of the amount of gas in the tank when you receive the truck, and fill it with enough gas to match that same level. If you don't, you'll have to pay a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.

Can I rent a truck or large equipment with only a driver's license?

No, you must hold a valid driver's license and be 21 or older. Depending on your state, you might require car insurance, as well as a credit card hold or a deposit, too. Please bring your credit card for Home Depot truck rentals, as we don't accept cash. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements, so read those if you plan to rent a Penske truck. Large equipment or select tools also require ID verification via CLEAR.

How do I get my large equipment rental?

Depending on your location, you may be able to get large equipment delivered and picked up from your job site for an affordable rate — out in the field or at your own home. We'll need at least 24 hours notice so we can adequately prepare your rented equipment and you'll need to rent it for a full day. In places where delivery isn't available, speak to an associate for the ideal way to get your large equipment.

What are some ways to avoid extra fees and penalties on rented large equipment?

Treat your rented large equipment as any other vehicle: Make sure you obey traffic laws and it's parked legally. Read the instructions so you're using it correctly to avoid injuring yourself or damaging the equipment. Also, plan ahead to ensure the equipment is ready when you are, as cancelling within 12 hours of delivery means you'll incur a cancellation fee. Extend your rental period if you need extra time so you won't get charged a late fee.
