Do I need to prime concrete foundation before applying Behr concrete solid stain? It seems to adhere just fine without it on the one section I completed already? I was told not to prime on vertical foundation walls??
        ByApr 28, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Hi Robert, thanks for your question. We recommend priming all bare concrete surfaces with our Concrete Bonding Primer before staining. However, if your foundation walls are previously coated, you do not need to prime. Enjoy the rest of your day! -Christina

Many users appreciate the variety of colors available and the ability to transform their concrete surfaces effectively. However, some customers have noted that the stain can be prone to peeling and staining, particularly in high-traffic areas or when exposed to hot tires. Overall, the product is well-regarded for its aesthetic improvements, though users emphasize the importance of proper surface preparation for the best outcomes.

Highly recommend this stain!!!! Great quality.
I used this on our very old concrete pool deck which was in bad shape. I used 17 gallons of the solid stain and around 4 gallons or so of the bonding primer. I wanted a solid look so I know I used a lot of this stain but it turned out beautiful. Looked brand new and received so many compliments. I researched so many different stains. Didn’t want to use paint which would peel. This has been on for about 1 year and still looks wonderful. I want to do our front porch and driveway next. I had several cracks which needed repaired and this stain worked just fine over that crack sealant repair.

I was going for a brick or terra-cotta front step. It is very much like a clay pot color.

                    Color doesn’t match description
Color is deceiving. I ordered washed khaki which looks like a light brown and thought that would nicely complement the color of our house and instead what I just put on is like a light tan with a green hue. It’s awful. I’ll have to repaint the entire thing. I was hoping it would cure darker because I just kept thinking that it didn’t look right, but my yard receives a lot of sunlight and it’s hard to tell sometimes but now that it’s shady, and the stain is dry, it’s obviously the wrong color.

Great dark coverage in just two coats
Staining my brick from a beige to Red Pepper, A Behr paint color. It was match and tented fast and easy. Used a spray painter designed to apply stain and paint and was able to do two coats in less than two hours each coat. First coat looked good and I could have stopped there, but a second coat really made the red pop. Clean up was easy and fast. Never clogged my sprayer.

Started developing the patches after two weeks
Applied silver gray color to the freshly poured concrete in my backyard. Paint was applied after two months of concrete pour/curing. One coat of primer and two coats of stain after that. Waited for a day after applying the primer for first coat of stain and then ~8 hours between the two coats of concrete stain. However, there are patches visible after two weeks. Really disappointed and complete waste of time and money.

                            Poor stain
This is a poor product. A lot of work goes into prepping concrete for this. Concrete stripper, etching, staining and top coat. Followed the instructions to a T. After a couple days of curing, I placed some painters tape down for caulking an expansion joint in the concrete. Peeled the tape up next day and up came the stain. It didn’t stain the concrete at all if it comes up like paint. So why call it stain?? Unbelievable, so much work for nothing considering I already top coated the stain.

Hi Nick, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear the stain peeled up when removing the tape. Customer satisfaction is very important, and our Customer Care team is on standby and ready to help. Please contact us directly so we can further assist you with a resolution. When taping over a newly stained or painted surface, I'd suggest using a low-tach tape, and when removing it be sure to pull it at a 45 degree angle. Again, our Customer Care team would like to hear from you to see how we can help. -Ronald Behr
