About This Product

Stratford Black Feather-Light Ceiling Tiles are unlike any ceiling tile you will ever see or feel. When you take them out of the box you will be surprised by the minimal weight of their Feather-Light construction. Ceilume Stratford tiles are formed from a thin sheet of vinyl that is only 0.013 in. thick about the thickness of a business card. But the Stratford's geometric design combined with the inherent strength of vinyl makes these tiles rigid, durable and easy to install. The Stratford Black Feather-Light Ceiling Tiles are not at all like the old mineral fiber tiles you're used to seeing and that's a good thing. They don't generate dust, they're unaffected by moisture, they don't harbor mold and they're easy to cut. Their black finish is refined, pure, and easy to clean. Place them in your ceiling grid and you'll be thrilled by the way the Stratford improves the look of your room.

Highlights

  • Made throughout from durable 0.013 in. thick black virgin vinyl material, these panels will not rust, stain, corrode or be affected by water or humidity; they resist mold, mildew and bacteria
  • Designer beauty, only better, no special tools or skills required for installation
  • Impact resistant ceiling panels are 2 ft. x 2 ft. (actual size 23.75 in. x 23.75 in.) and each panel covers a 4 sq. ft. area
  • ASTM-E84 Class A fire rated, IAPMO UES ER-310 recognized compliant with 2006, 2009 and 2012 International Building Code and FDA compliant for food preparation areas
  • As a general rule, Ceilume Ceiling Tiles and Panels will not be affected by ceiling level temperatures up to 120 °F; in some installations involving halogen lights, metal heat registers and radiant heat sources (wood stoves, kitchen ovens, etc.), localized ceiling and ceiling tile temperatures can be much higher than anticipated; please contact the manufacturer for specific advice if your installation has any of these special conditions
  • Excellent for remodeling or new construction, these elegant decorative ceiling panels trim easily with scissors or aviation snips for can light openings, etc.
  • Greenguard Gold certified for indoor air quality and children and schools and fully recyclable. FM-4651 and UL-R4036 listed for installation beneath fire suppression sprinklers

Questions & Answers

Will they pass residential basement use under international building code 2021?
ByMay 1, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

All Ceilume ceiling tiles and panels carry a Class A fire rating which meets the IBC's requirement for smoke production and flame spread for interior wall and ceiling finish materials. The Stratford's low profile and flexibility will help you meet the IBC's minimum 7' height requirement as they can be installed with minimum clearance above the ceiling. Please consult with your local building officials to see if your local building code calls for a 1-hour fire resistance rating. This is a rare requirement, but if your home is subject to this requirement then you would need to select a mineral fiber tile. Please call Ceilume at 877-492-5605 with any other questions.

If the glue doesn't hold these down..would there be other things that will hold them in place?
        ByNov 6, 2024
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

For almost all installations gravity will hold your Stratford ceiling tiles in place. Despite their thin vinyl material and light weight, they sit just fine in standard 1" or 15/16' suspended ceiling grids without the use of adhesives. In some installations (small spaces with just one entrance door or rooms that are subject to wind load) there is the possiblity that any type of ceiling tile may shift in the ceiling grid. HomeDepot.com sells a variety of ceiling tile clips that are installed on top of the ceiling grid and will prevent the tiles from moving. Here is a HomeDepot.com link to an example of the clips: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ToolPro-Spring-Steel-Ceiling-Panel-Hold-Down-Clips-20-PK-TP05116/306546108

How many will I need for a 500sqft building
          ByOct 20, 2024
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Each Stratford 2x2 ceiling tile covers 4 sq feet. For an area 500 sq ft you would need a minimum of 125 tiles. It is important to note that most ceilings do not lay out to a perfect 2x2 grid so there will most likely be partial tile pieces at the perimeter of the room(s) where you will have to cut the tiles. There is typically some waste involved in the cutting process, especially if the partial pieces are over 12" wide.

Would this product fit 9/16 grid?
                ByJul 15, 2024

                Answer This Question

Ceilume's Stratford ceiling tiles can only be installed in a standard 1" or 15/16" grid. They will not sit well in a 9/16" (aka Slimline) grid. HomeDepot.com sells Ceilume's Oxford, Cambridge, Madison, Diamond Plate, Jackson, Continental, and Fleur-de-lis tiles which can all be installed in the 9/16" ceiling grid.

Customers say the Ceilume Stratford Feather-Light ceiling panels are visually appealing and easy to install, often using just scissors for cutting. Many appreciate their lightweight design and modern look, which significantly upgrades the appearance of spaces like basements and bathrooms. However, some customers express concerns about the panels being too thin and flimsy, which can affect their ability to support lighting fixtures and insulation. Overall, while the aesthetic appeal is widely praised, the product's durability and structural integrity receive mixed feedback.

                  Great tiles but…
Tiles look great and much easier to install then any other I have used. But previous tiles had some noise dampening qualities that these tiles don’t provide. The insulation needed doubled the cost of the job.

                  The tiles are paper thin
They are too thin to even hold their own weight. Not sure how you could use these in a permanent situation. They rattle and move whenever you close a door.

Hi Sir Artimus, thanks for sharing your thoughts on Ceilume's Statford ceiling tiles. It sounds like you're surprised at how thin the Stratford ceiling tiles are. The HomeDepot.com listing says "Ceilume Stratford tiles are made from a very thin sheet of vinyl that is only 0.013 inch thick, the thickness of a business card". While the thin tiles are flexible when handled, they're certainly more than strong enough to hold their own weight. They're made from a durable vinyl which ASTM testing has proven be "an order of magnitude" more durable than mineral fiber tiles.

All ceiling tiles have the capacity to move when subjected to rapid changes in air pressure (especially if the tiles are installed in a smaller room with only one door). This is why all ceiling manufacturers offer some sort of Ceiling Hold Down Clip. Here is a link to 3 products offered at HomeDepot.com https://www.homedepot.com/s/ceiling%20panel%20%22hold-down%20clips%22?NCNI-5

When you factor in that the tiles are Class A fire rated, GreenGuard Gold Certified for indoor air quality, don't harbor mold or mildew, and won't sag, we believe that they're a bargain. As the years pass, we hope that your new ceiling grows on you and you come to love Ceilume's Stratford as much as we do. Thanks for giving them a place in your home. Ceilume

                    Great product!
We love our new ceiling! The tiles are beautiful, easy to clean, and the install was quick and easy. First off, I used the Ceilume website calculator to plan my project as I had several rooms with odd shapes to consider. I highly recommend starting there, it was easy to use and provided the correct number of materials with just a little extra that I needed to finish the job and included a layout for the grid. Installation was quick as the tiles are easy to cut with scissors yet sturdy enough to hold their shape. I used Halo 4" LED recessed lighting with metal support brackets that are sold separately. It took a little effort to get the panel and light assembly to fit and lay flat, which is not uncommon with any suspended ceiling tile. It would be awesome if there were sturdier panels or supports available from Ceilume for the lighting install locations. I do have one issue with small rooms such as a bathroom, when I open the door the ceiling tiles flutter and make a rattling noise, I plan to use clips, maybe clothespins, to hold the panels in place. Overall, this is a great product and the only reason that I rated it a 4 instead of 5 is so other readers will be aware of the minor issues mentioned above, I definitely recommend this product as a low-cost ceiling solution that has our friends asking where they can get this product.

Hi Honeydew Guy, thanks for your review and the kind words. While not typical, all ceiling tiles can move when there is a rapid change in air pressure, especially in the instance you mentioned: a small room with limited paths for the trapped air to move when you open a door. That's why every large ceiling tile manufacturer makes a ceiling tile hold down clip. You can find a variety of them at HomeDepot.com (this clip would work well with Ceilume's tiles: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ToolPro-Ceiling-Panel-Hold-Down-Clips-20-Pack-TP05116/306546108 )

I would easily give this 5 stars for big open ceilings. Only have jt a 4 because if you have cut up small rooms, it doesn’t look the greatest against the wall due to the fact of the deep indentions.

Hi Doug, thanks for the kind words. We're glad to hear that your Stratford tiles look good. I've got some great news for you; ASTM testing has shown that while the Stratford tile is lightweight and flexible, they're an "order of magnitude" stronger than old school mineral fiber tiles. If you'd like to nerd out on the test details, you can find them by searching Ceilume's website for "Strength" Thanks for giving the Stratford a place in your home.
