What is the core layer made of?
Hello, The inner plies are made of poplar/pine in the eastern US and in the western US it is made of fir/pine.
Columbia uses Yellow Poplar as their plywood cores - East Coast USA harvested. But IMO since you will not see the core, the important thing is the PureBond construction which uses soy-based glues and resins to avoid formaldehyde which will off-gas for decades. I've used the cherry veneer on several cabinet and furniture projects and have not been disappointed. FWIW, Columbia's direct ship custom cut feature has been surprisingly spot on as well!
Can I special order A Grade and quarter sawn plywood?
These panels are top grade, however, as far as I know Home Depot does not provide for a special order quarter sawn panel.

On the custom cut, is it possible to get rounded edges on one side?
No, this is 1/2” plywood veneer, if you want rounded edges, and if you decide to use a 1/2” radius router bit, you will reveal the layers of core veneers....if that is OK with you. I worked on a project recently requiring rounded edges with a 1/2” radius. I decided to glue a 1/2” thick 2” wide solid cherry wood trim piece along each edge and then produced a rounded 1/2” radius using a router bit. Looks great. Just make certain that you can make glue line quality cuts for all joints on all edges; I.e. for both the plywood edge and the trim piece edge so that you have almost an invisible glue line joint.
I apologize, but we are not able to round the edges. We can only offer straight, square cuts at this time.

Are the edges and ends of the boards finished? If not, how can I get a nice finished edge? I will be making bookshelves.
The edges are not finished. you would have to find a band or edging at your local home depot to use with it.
Hello, The edges are not finished. You can use solid lumber to trim the edges or you could use edge banding material that is applied with heat.

No, it is ready to stain.
No stripping required, sanding is up to the purchaser. I personally recommend sanding it, starting with a 120 grit to a 220 grit.

Hello, Just a light sand is all that is required before applying your finish. The panel will not have any coating on it that requires stripping.
