Q:what is the total harmonic destination(thd)for this generator?
by|Apr 14, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello John, Thank you for your question. The specific Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) for this unit is not reported, however, the THD of standard portable generators is typically in the range of 9% to 15%, and some generators may produce as much as 30% THD. If you are concerned with operating sensitive electronics, we recommend considering an XD, XG, XC, XT, or inverter model, as they all provide power with Less than 6% THD.

It does what it's supposed to
After 35 years at the same address and typically dealing with 1 or 2 mostly short outages per year, we experienced an 8 hour outage and a 5 hour outage within 2 months. My wife said we need a generator! We looked at whole house backup but that seemed like overkill and very expensive. After lots of online research we settled on a Generac in the 6500-8000 watt range. Because we have a well, we needed 230v output. The price difference between 6500 and 8000 was so small, we opted for the GP8000e. The installer put a lockout on our electrical panel so we can switch between generator power or electric service but the generator cannot backfeed the incoming electric. Yesterday we experienced a 5 hour outage. After 30 minutes, I rolled the generator out of the garage and onto my patio. It fired up with electric start even though I had not charged the battery since the initial startup 4 months ago. I hooked up the 30amp cable to the receptacle on the house, switched the lockout on the service entrance to generator power and we had power. In addition to the well pump, furnace fan, and fridge, we ran the microwave, an electric cooktop (not at the same time), and all the lights we wanted. My only complaint, though not unexpected, was the volume. It is loud! My phone sound meter app registered 90db at about 10' away. It was about 8' from our family room and even with the windows closed, it was too loud to watch TV comfortably so we retreated to the basement. It's also quite heavy but I had no real trouble wheeling it around the house from the garage to the patio. Overall, I'm very pleased with it and my wife was happy that we had water and a cold refrigerator during our 5 hour outage.

Generac doesn't stand by their product
Took to local small engine shop and they found broken head. The cause was a missing snap ring to hold the rocker arm shaft on the exhaust valve assembly. Generac wouldn't even talk about it. They said 2 years is all the support you have.

              Having Issues
I am in the middle of Hurricane Ida. I decided to spend the money to get another generator as my Briggs and Stratton was getting more difficult to run. I purchased the generator and it ran fine for 10 hours. It ran out of gas and I filled it up with gas and it would not crank. I pulled the spark plug and cleaned it and it would not fire. I went to the store to ask about possible issues. I was told to put more oil in it. I already put the quart supplied and I was told to fill it up. I returned home and filled it up with oil. I even replace the spark plug and still no fire. I loaded up the unit and got another one. Got home, it ran for 1 hour and stopped. I went outside and cranked it again. It ran for 5 minutes and stopped. I removed all but one extension cord and removed the air breather and it is now running but i dont have much confidence in it. I drove 45 minutes 3 times to get it to work. It is very hot and I am trying to stay positive but its getting more difficult. I called Generac 3 times and the customer service reps were nice but none could tell me why I was having these issues. Its not easy to return as the unit is heavy and I have to stuff it in a car. I also am trying to work during this time as well as get all the damages to my home repaired. I thought Generac would be a good brand and perhaps I just got two bad apples in a row. I did not overload the unit and used strong extension cords. I dont have time to return it again as I have other things to do as a result of the hurricane.

Definitely one of the best purchases I've ever made ...
I purchased this Generac during the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. Pro's: Very little assembly was needed before it was ready for service. Excellent quality of construction. Has a good set of features to make it easy to use and keep it in service as long as it is required. (Fuel gauge, hour meter, and quite a decent sized fuel tank) Con's: Pull start only. (Not necessarily a "negative" as there's no starter system/circuit to worry about going out, and no battery to maintain in the off season) The engine can be a little noisy, but with proper/common sense placement of the unit this can be mitigated. The COSense system can trip itself if you place the unit's exhaust near a wall or if the unit is in the corner of a building where the breeze could keep the exhaust from drifting away. (In other words, it's quite sensitive ... so keep that in mind with placement). Overall: It's not the cheapest generator, but in this case... you honestly get what you've paid for. If I could go back in time and have the choice of buying it again, I absolutely would. So far, I'm 100% satisfied after the very easy initial setup and figuring out the best way to place the unit to keep it in service. The unit does what it's supposed to, and has been worth every single red cent since it's purchase. Keep up the good work Generac, and please ... whatever you do, don't stoop to cutting corners like some of the other manufacturer's whose generators I've used before have in recent times. Sincerely, A satisfied customer named Stephen

                  Awesome Home Back Up
Took it out of the box attached wheels and legs. Small problem with a punched out piece of metal still in one of the holes. A little bit of a pain to drill out but got it. Filled with oil and stabilized gas hit start button and off we went. Wired home interlock and plug in to breaker panel which was very easy. Shut main breaker off turned on 30 amp breaker and ran the entire home. Not oven or AC although it would run AC and furnace with some things turned off. I was running Well pump and sump pump as well as a refrigerator and freezer. Awesome machine so far. Looking forward to first power outage. I will be turning on the front porch lights to show off.

                    We lose power a lot
Living in Connecticut means Nor'Easters, Winter Storms and occasional tropical storms. With TS Isaias came the latest outage, our old generator would.not.start. By some miracle, his unit was available in Rhode, IS so we can run and grabbed it. Starts easy, good hours meter, consumes ~7 gallons per 10 hours, but we ran ours four on and two off. Its not any louder or quieter than others, its a generator... Power wise, it was more than enough to run our fridge, chest freezer, all lights, TV and stereo, and our well pump. Food and creature comforts. We did not use it to continuously power the electric hot water heater, but we did recharge it during one overnight when everything else was turned off. Also, we could have turned off the well pumps to use the oven or range, but we choose not too because we enjoyed using the grill.

Very poor carburetor design/manufacturing, broken plastic choke butterfly valve pivot pin.
Planned to test the generator in preparation for the potential hurricane. Very poor carburetor design/manufacturing, broken plastic choke butterfly valve pivot pin, plastic choke lever. Very disappointing customer service, no support. Less than 10 hours on a 3 year old, perfectly maintained GP5500, flipped choke lever to start the unit and the plastic butterfly valve pivot pin/connector snapped. GENERAC only sells the entire $75 carburetor assembly, not the 25 cent plastic part. The generator was typically very difficult to start and particularly noisy when it was functional.

Perfect Portable to run the house
Three quotes of average 6500.00 to set up a house generator. This was a great choice. although it won't automatically start when power goes out. We can plug this in and power our whole panel, then just be careful on what you use. total cost plus the hiring af electrician 1600.00. Simple box switch. Perfect solution for us.

10 hrs on a brand new GP 5500 and no power
I bought this GP 5500 for a hurricane that was coming. (This generator has the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). Another storm was head my way so I rolled it out and and started it up. Plugged in a 1/2" electric drill motor and NOTHING!!! I pushed the breaker button and still nothing. Cleaned the armature slip rings, replaced the AVR, replaced the brushes and still nothing. I have a 700 dollar piece of trash. Engine runs perfect, starts on the first pull. I am getting readings with my multi-tester of: 1.45 volts, 28-31 Hz at receptacles~ hot leg to Neutral or Ground I paid extra money to get what was supposed to be the best generator on the market and all I have is a very good running gasoline burner.
