About This Product

It's simple: treat weeds and feed your lawn with Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed3 in the fall for a better lawn next spring. This weed killer plus lawn fertilizer controls over 50 listed lawn weeds, including clover, dandelion, plantain, morning glory, chicory, evening primrose, and purslane. In addition, it delivers the nutrients needed to help repair damage from the summertime and build strong roots to take on harsh winter conditions. Apply Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed3 on a calm day when weeds are actively growing and temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 90°F. Make sure your grass is wet from dew or sprinkling, as this helps particles adhere to weed leaves to produce the best results. We recommend using a Scotts spreader to apply this product. For Scotts broadcast/rotary spreaders, use a setting of 3 ¼. For Scotts drop spreaders, use a setting of 6. Do not water your lawn for 24 hours after application or apply if rain is expected within the next 24 hours. Do not apply to St. Augustinegrass, Floratam, Dichondra, Lippia, Carpetgrass, or Bentgrass. One 14.29 lb. bag of Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed3 covers 5,000 sq. ft.

Bag says apply when weeds are actively growing. I want to as a preventative, fall application. I currently don’t have any weeds growing and want to keep it that way. Do the instructions mean I must have weeds growing in my lawn for this to be of help?
        ByOct 14, 2023
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Thank you for your interest in our products. This product does not have a weed preventer element, only a weed killer. You can still apply this product, as the weed killer will simply not do anything if there are no weeds to kill. When the packaging states the weeds must be actively growing, this means that dormant weeds will not take up the weed killer and therefore won't be killed. Once the temperatures begin to drop the weeds will become dormant. To prevent weeds, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Halts with Crabgrass Preventer in the spring.

Customers say that Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed is an effective product for maintaining a healthy lawn, particularly in preparing it for winter and promoting growth in spring. Many users appreciate its ease of application and the noticeable greening of their lawns. However, some customers have reported issues with clumping in the product, which can lead to uneven application and potential grass burn. Overall, while the product generally performs well, there are mixed experiences regarding its effectiveness against certain weeds and the recent reduction in bag sizes.

Clumpy and the ratio has changed
Ive used Scott's fertilizer for years. I'm in ohio and now we are October using a clumped up fertilizer? This happened to me last year as well but last year I just thought I bought a bad bag. So here we are again same issue alongside of the fertilizer feeding my weeds to grow not my grass. Clumps!? I'm switching! Any suggestions?

Do not waste your money on this product
I bought this product about 3-4 weeks ago. I put it on my lawn, exactly as directions stated. It did not kill any weeds. Matter of fact-the weeds are looking healthier! I have used Scott’s products for many years. I am disappointed. This is a waste of my hard earned money.

Response from Customer CareSep 20, 2024
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Weed & Feed and appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback. Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Weed & Feed must stick to weed leaves to be effective. Product should be left undisturbed and not watered for 24 hours after application. Temperatures must be consistently (several days in a row) between 60 and 90 degrees. When temperatures are high (over 90°+) weeds slow their growth down and can not absorb the product. If weeds are not getting regular watering, they can not absorb product. Weeds may temporarily appear healthier and greener after an application of a weed control. The active ingredients trigger uncontrolled plant growth that causes weeds listed on the label to die. You notice the weeds begin to curl and yellow a few days after application due to this excessive growth. Weeds will die within 2 to 4-week period, depending on temperature conditions. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.

I bought this to use on my lawn, unfortunately they put what types of grass not to use it on in very small writing on the back after the directions. Hoping I didn’t just kill my entire lawn. The warnings should come first or labeled on front for types of lawns.

Applied this exactly as instructed after reading all the reviews. Within a week, started getting splotches of death on my lawn. The dandelions and clovers, on the other hand, are still thriving. Scotts, how do you fix this? I could ask for my money back, but I’d rather my lawn be fixed.

How is it that in the text description for using a spreader it says to use setting 6 but on the picture of the bag's actual direction it says to use a setting of 7 1/4. So which is it? Does anyone proof read your publications? Not good. Show me where I am mistaken and I will retract. The option to add photos at the bottom of this page is not working.

                              Satisfied but clumpy
I have been using Scott’s products for 20 years and always have pretty good luck. Something seems to have changed however as I get far more clumping in the bags. I just got done fertilizing a very large lawn and used 3 bags, two of them had significant clumping which I had to break-up with a hand trowel. A little inconvenient and definitely a quality issue. I also have a suggestion. With the weed and feed products, I wish the Scott’s spreaders had solid wheels that don’t have openings on the interior of the spreader. When applying on a damp lawn, they product gathers and clumps in the wheels then falls into the lawn in clumps creating burned areas. While small, it is frustrating and would be solved with a solid wheel.

                                This stuff sucks
I bought a bag of Scotts Weed and Feed today and opened it and was just a big wet gob of mush. It won't spread out of my spreader even on the highest setting. Not to mention, stuff leaked out of the bag all over the upholstery in my car and all over my clothes. Sure hope it comes out. I will never buy Scotts again.

                                  Weed growth started like crazy!
Do not waste your money! My newer lawn had no weeds at all before the application. l applied this WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed (applied the product exactly per printed instructions on the bag) in the fall so that the turf has the energy to stay healthy in the winter and gets a better lawn next spring. However, after a few weeks of application tons of weeds started to grow and invade large sections of the lawns.
