Is this safe to use around dogs? I have 2 large dogs (smallest is 70lb) is there anyway this could potentially shock/injure them? I also have a 7 year old niece. Although I don't plan on leaving either unattended near the trap you never know what could happen. How safe is this?

We recommend this trap be placed out of the reach of small pets and children.

I don't have small children, or dogs of any size. I keep my Victor Multi Kill Electronic Mouse Trap alternately in my garage and in my chicken coop. Unless your large dogs chew on hard plastic (sort of big) things I doubt it would harm them in any way. I don't think eating batteries would be good for them. And children would have to open it. A 7 year old is old enough to know to not open it if you tell them to, but as far as an 'on purpose' touching of any thing inside... I don't know. I have opened it many times to 'release the souls' of the dead mice. I have changed the batteries. I have put peanut butter in the top part with a metal knife. I never felt any electrical charge from the unit. I'm not about to try to on purpose :) So maybe someone else has a better reply for you.

Yes, it is safe. If the child should pick it up and figure out how to open it, and touch the shock pad, she would get a mild shock. I actually did shock myself with it before accidentally when changing the battery and not paying attention. Shocked, but not seriously.

Yes, it's safe for dogs and kids.

In my experience, yes it would be safe for dogs and kids. They would have to somehow unlatch the very tight top latch to access the shock area and then have to reach in & simultaneously touch two separate plates (like the front and back paws of a mouse) to get shocked. Not easily done "accidently". Even if they did all that, the shock is not that serious because of their size relative to a mouse. It would be unpleasant but not deadly.

This unit is only for indoors. But it really isn't a very good unit. I used mine in a high rodent area in the Sierra foothills and in 6 months it caught one mouse. There were several living in the large shed at the time. I then used a snap trap style and caught mice everyday.

This trap isn't made to be exposed to rain and snow. I do use mine outside though in a protected area.

These Victor traps do work outside, best not to leave them in the rain though. I leave the large one behind the garage for the larger rodents sense we have chickens and other animals that will attract mice and field rats. These do work but you do need to check them regularly.

It is not designed to deal with rats since the size of the pathway is for mice only. It is possible to use it to destroy baby rats but i'm not sure about it.

No. The entrance way for the trap is too small for rats.

peanut butter is good. However, use whatever the mice are getting into.

We recommend using a small, pea-sized amount of peanut butter on the back wall of the trap.

The most common bait used is peanut butter. Other possible baits would include: cheese, marshmallow and beef jerky.

WORKS GREAT, LOVE IT ! !
Living in rural mountains, we have plenty of mice looking for comfy places to move into to stay out of the elements. We never had problem with mice in the house - the project of sealing and caulking the entire house & every crack was worth it (some people may not realize that a mouse needs only about 1/4" to squeeze through). We have no pets, so it is easy to keep the house free of tempting treats for critters. However, once in a while I find mouse evidence under the crawl space or the detached garage, and have to evict them. I have used the "bucket and seed method" in the past and it works, but I wanted a quicker and more humane treatment. This trap was our solution and it captured a mouse on the third day in the crawl space. (I know it was a mouse, but don't know what kind .. I don't examine them closely). It is so convenient to just remove the drawer and dispose of the contents. Our choice of bait is safflower seeds which we got in a dollar store, very inexpensive (the mice love them and it is less messy than peanut butter). We do make sure there is no alternative food source anywhere in the area first. I like the design of the trap and it is well made. The two stairways have adequate holes on the tops. A nice feature is the "V" light indicator that shows red, green or yellow and blinks or is steady for each different status (as in pictures) and the status reminder is on the side for easy remembering of what each light means. The only dislike I have is that it does not have the option of a battery eliminator, I prefer the reliability of things being hard-wired. I will eventually convert this to a plug-in trap and keep it primarily in the garage. I was very pleased with this trap, and the Victor website gives valuable information and tips ("Rodent Proofing") for ensuring success in eliminating any rodent problems.

We are sorry to hear that! If given a choice, a rodent will go to a trap in the open vs. a trap he has to enter to reach the bait. To take full advantage of the "no touch, no view" disposal of the electronic traps, we recommend removing any snap traps from the area. If you continue to be unhappy with your results, please feel free to contact the original retailer for assistance with a refund.

After weeks of using several units, none have caught even one mouse. We will stick with the traditional snap-traps.
